Summary
Shovel Knightdeveloper Yacht Club Games announced during its 10th Anniversary showcase that a brand-new game is in development, hinting that the title will launch the series into “an entirely new dimension of gaming.”
Shovel Knight is easily considered as one of the forebears of indie gaming. If there was a Mount Rushmore for indie games, Shovel Knight would be there. Ever since its release back in 2014, developer Yacht Club Games has been expanding upon the title, releasing all kinds of DLC and regular updates, turning it into one of the best 2D platformers of all time, all while having our iconic blue knight show up as a crossover in pretty much every popular indie game you’re able to think of.

After almost a decade of supporting the game with updates, and releasing the occasional spinoff, Yacht Club Games has now announced that it’s ready to move on and create a brand-new, mainline title for the series. This was announced by studio founder Sean Velasco during the recent Yacht Club Games Presents Showcase, in which we also gotnew looks at Mina the Hollowerand the announcement of a Shovel Knight remaster.
Shovel Knight Is Getting A Sequel, And It Might Be 3D
Velasco doesn’t go into too much detail about the title, as the studio isn’t quite ready to unveil what it’s cooking, but he does mention that it will launch the series into “an entirely new dimension of gaming.” Shovel Knight has obviously been exclusively 2D and sprite-based so far across the main game and all of its spinoffs, but the reveal of a 3D Yacht Club Games logo at the same time as the announcement suggests the developer might be experimenting with the third dimension.
We don’t get much detail in terms of the story either, though Velasco does tease that “hidden details” about the sequel have been planted throughout all the developer’s Shovel Knight titles. That goes some way to showing usjust how long Yacht Club Games has been planning for this new gamein the series, and we can only hope that the studio will give us a sneak peek at what it’s been working on soon.
