These days,Fortniteis almost unrecognizable from the game it was when it first launched in 2017. After all, back on launch day, you didn’t see Goku jumping around while armed with an assault rifle. Many things have changed since then with all the additional skins and accessories. But the changes haven’t just been visual.
Epic Games has also messed with various gameplay features and modes since the start. One of the most controversial changes was the removal of the Trios mode, which allowed you to compete in teams of three. Fans had always loved that mode, so why did Epic Games remove it?

Why Did Fortnite Remove Trios?
In May 2023,Fortnite rolled out the update that removed (aka vaulted) the Trios mode. At that point, Epic Games offered no explanation as to why that happened. It was almost like the company didn’t see it as a major change to the game. The fanbase thought it was significant, though, and complained.
A month later, Fortnite releaseda statement to talk about the new update. In it, the Fortnite Team explained that their decision to remove Trios was all about"minimizing queue times and maintaining matchmaking quality for all players"as they introduced ranked play. There’s no reason not to believe them, as dropping a popular mode for no reason doesn’t really benefit them or their game.
However, in this same statement, the Fortnite Team also announcedTrios' returnfor non-ranked Battle Royal and Zero Build. So, it wasn’t gone for that long, and they even later enabled you to play ranked Trios.
Therefore, it didn’t turn out to be the end of the world for the Fortnite community. Still, the initial decision to remove Trios did annoy plenty of people, especially since the Fortnite Team didn’t explain their decision until later.
