Borderlands 3introduced a series of free DLCs known as Takedowns, where players assault enemy bases for new loot, facing old factions as they attempt to rise again. The first of these, Takedown at the Maliwan Blacksite, has the Vault Hunters go against the Maliwan military force before they can make new weapons.

While the story is simple enough, the bosses have great designs, making their fights rise as fan favorites. From the two boss fights, the Valkyrie Squad is what has players wanting to know more, but since they aren’t the final boss, not much is known.

What Happens In Takedown At The Maliwan Blacksite?

Since this happensin a post-game DLC,the Maliwan invasionforce that was trying to invade Prometheais already defeated. Lorelei tasks you with dealing with a small group ofMaliwan military amassing at Midnight’s Cairn, where a weapons development facility is located.

Beyond that, it is business as usual, as you mow down the many Maliwan infantry and mechs that you encounter (there is also some wildlife that tries to kill you, but that’s to be expected in Borderlands). Eventually, you’ll find the first of two weapon prototypes that the Mailwan were preparing:the Valkyrie Squad.

Who Are The Valkyrie Squad?

The Valkyrie Squad are a trio of weaponized mechs, with flying and shield abilities. The fight starts with you facing them in turns (alongside their minions), until you face all three of them at the same time.

While the three Valkyries share a single health bar, it is merely representative; you have to take down each Valkyrie to win the fight.

The three Valkyries are named Sigrdrifa, Hildr, and Rota— their names being references tothe Valkyries from Norse mythology. According to Lorelei, they are some of the most advanced mechs around, but they are not the end goal of the raid.

The Maliwan were clearly developing the Valkyries for a new assault, and while we don’t know if they were finished, they had to be deployed to stop youfrom destroying their ultimate weapon. Said weapon isthe final boss of the raid, Wotan the Invincible, whose name is a reference to Odin, the patron god of the Norse pantheon.
