Quick Links
Your introduction to matches and candles inAnimal Wellis pretty early into the game before you’ve even left the starting area. Unlit candles will spawn spirits every time you enter the room, so you’ll need to light all the candles in the game in order to navigate safely.
Unfortunately, you don’t have a fire source, so you’ll need to find nine matches in Animal Well to light each of the correlating candles. Matches and candles can be found in any order, like much of the rest of the game can be played. Light them all when you find them!

Given that there aren’t many named locations in the game, our guide on where to find every candle and match in Animal Well breaks down locations byquadrant, thecolor of the mapin that area, the animal you’ll face there, and the upgrade relevant to the area. Consult your map often!

Where To Get Every Match
Before you can begin lighting candles in Animal Well, you’ll first need to collectmatches in treasure chests around the mapto actually start a fire and light it. In all, there arenine matcheshidden throughout the game.
Location Details
Starting Area
In the room with your first telephone, ride the top platform to a hidden path in the top left corner of the room, and follow it to find your first match in Animal Well.
Along the Well shaft
As you descend the well, you’ll notice a treasure chest along the left wall. To access it, from where youobtained the P. Flameafter solvingthe M. Disc Shrine puzzle, get off the lift at a ladder on the right, and you’ll be able to reach the match.
Northwest Quadrant (Dog/Disc)
Pink Biome
As you climb the ladder upfrom the egg room, you’ll notice a switch on the left that turns on and off a nearby wall. Once you have the Disc, go back to this location, go through the wall you’re able to turn on and off, and toss your Disc at the switch on the right wall. This opens a path just beneath you, leading to a hidden chest with a match.
In the flipping switches puzzle directly above the ladder, above the statue where you got the Disc, there’s a chest with a match in the lower left corner.
Just to the right of the puzzle above is a telephone. From the phone, drop into the passage in the lower right corner of the screen and follow the path to a treasure chest with a match that you saw earlier but couldn’t reach.
Go left two rooms from the penguin statue with the fruit at their feet, and turn the switches in this room on and off to reach the treasure chest on a platform in the center of the room.
Southeast Quadrant (Ostrich/Yoyo)
Indigo Biome
In the room just beneaththe Ostrich’s first puzzleon your map, you’ll find two enemies with swords protecting a chest in the middle. Get to the left side of the top platform (getting the chest if you’d like), and jump to a hidden path along the left wall. Quickly open the chest here, being careful of the nearby enemy in this narrow inlet
In the room southwest of the giant rabbit mural puzzle, you’ll need to navigate in the dark to reach a chest hidden in the center of the room. (You’ll be told it’s too dark to see the map if you try in here.)
Northeast Quadrant (Iguana/Slinky)
Green Biome
From the telephone just to the right of the main Well, open the pathway leading left and open the chest to find the last match.
Even if you find a candle, if you don’t have a match, you won’t be able to do much with it. It’s best tograb the matches from around the map as you come upon them normallyto prevent any potential backtracking later.
Where To Find Every Candle
As you no doubt noticed fairly early on into Animal Well, before you even left the starting area, there’s a candle in certain rooms around the map thatspawn spirits from the candles. To prevent the spirits from spawning at all, you’ll need tolight the candle in the roomin order to traverse safely.
If you don’t have a match at the moment, it’s a good idea to mark your map with the location andtoss a Firecracker to startle spiritsif the candle in the room isn’t lit.
On the right side of the starting area, before you climb the ladder and grab your map, there’s a candle you can drop onto from a platform on the screen above, and light it to prevent this first spirit from spawning.
Go left from the telephone next to the statue where you got the Disc, and weave through the underground tunnels until you enter the room just above the large bubble chamber in the Seahorse biome. The candle is on a high ledge in this room.
There’s a candle on the right side of the flip switch puzzle directly above the ladder puzzle, where you need to use your Disc to toggle the walls on and off.
Directly beneath the telephone in the far northwest corner of the map, you’ll find an unlit candle in a large, cavernous room. Just be ready when you light is, as doing so beginsthe battle with a rather pesky Bat.
Just beneath the room with the two dogs reaching toward a statue filled with grass, you’ll need to use your Disc to turn on and off the platforms to navigate this room. The candle is in the center toward the top of the room.
In the room just beneath the Bat puzzle, you’ll find another candle as you turn the switches and make the walls solid and transparent around the room.
Southwest Quadrant (Seahorse/B. Wand)
Purple Biome
From the telephone past where you caged the humming bird that kept popping your bubbles, jump up to the top right corner and use your Yoyo to break the spikes around this area. Follow the penguin through the maze to the right and drop through the opening at the bottom of this screen. You’ll be in a large, greenish area with a penguin at the bottom of the room. Use the penguin and your B. Wand to jump to the platform on the right in this room, then follow it up on screen and light the candle in the room with the first penguin maze.
You’ll find this candle as you begin pursuing the Ostrich and finding the Yoyo, but go right two screens from the telephone in the beginning area of the Ostrich puzzle. In the middle of the platforms that can be made transparent and solid, you’ll find a candle.
The path to the final candle is a bit hidden. From the heart-shaped room with the phone, go down two ladders and left one room. It’s completely dark in here with an extremely narrow system of tunnels you’ll need to navigate to find the candle in the middle of the maze.
The number of candles you have left to find can be gauged by checking the number of candles lit in the room next to where you first emerged in the starting area. The bottom left fast travel head can take you directly there.
