Summary

It’s Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door release day. An exciting time for fans of the original version of the RPG as well as those of you who will be embarking onNintendo’s RPG adventure for the first time. The build to its launch hasn’t been without controversy, though.Amazon and Walmart canceled pre-ordersfor the game, the latter as recently as last week, without any explanation. However, Walmart appears to have been shipping pre-orders anyway despite telling customers they had been canceled.

That’saccording to Nintendealwhich has shared tracking for a copy of Paper Mario courtesy of Walmart despite the customer being told their pre-order had been canceled. It’s not the only one either as other customers have been sharing their own unexpected tracking info updates in the replies, some of whom will now have two copies of the game by the end of the day. What isn’t clear is whether Walmart has already issued their refunds.

Not only would Walmart customers with supposedly canceled pre-orders either have been issued a refund or been in the process of getting one, but they should have also been given a $25 voucher to spend in store to make up for the inconvenience. The only insight into the cancelations given was that it was by order of Nintendo and that the game would still be available in Walmart stores starting on release day. As for why pre-orders are being shipped regardless, that hasn’t been explained. Either Nintendo changed its mind, some pre-orders weren’t canceled on Walmart’s end, or Walmart has actively decided to ship them regardless.

WHERE TO PLAY

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a remake of the well-loved RPG first released on the GameCube. Relive this iconic adventure that turns 2D on its head and turns Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom into paper.

Paper Mario wasn’t the only Switch game to have its pre-orders unceremoniously canceled. The same thing happened to Endless Ocean: Luminous, andLuigi’s Mansion 2 HDpre-orders are still unavailable on Amazon. The theory is that Nintendo wants people to go into stores to buy its new games, hence Walmart relaying that Paper Mario would still be available in store but both Endless Ocean and Paper Mario still missing from Amazon despite their release days having passed.

That theory stacks up asAmazon has also stopped selling gift cards. Unless you find them through a third-party seller, Amazon simply doesn’t have them anymore. The only way we’ll find out what’s going on here is if Nintendo offers up an explanation, so we’re probably never going to know. As for Walmart’s Paper Mario pre-orders, if you were told yours was canceled, you may want to check your emails as there could still be a copy of the game on its way to you right now.
