The most intriguing aspect of Vanillaware’s tactical RPG Unicorn Overlord is the unit-crafting system. Your ever-growing army will consist of characters from a variety of fantasy classes, from the familiar lance-wielding knight and spell-slinging witch to more unique options like the Wereowl and Elven Sibyl, and the trick is positioning them in the right slots to make effective units. As you experiment with all the classes, you’ll surely learn more and more about what makes them tick (the game is very deep strategically), and even relate to certain of their traits.
The signs of the zodiac offer a similar level of variety, and each of them is a great fit for one of Unicorn Overlord’s many classes. Let’s see which class best fits your own zodiac sign.
12Capricorn (Earth Sign, December 22 - January 19)
Dark Lord
Capricorns bristle with ambition, boasting the drive to achieve extraordinary things. Sometimes, those things amount to going the extra mile to get that promotion at the office. Other times, they involve vicious campaigns to wage war against the ruling family and subjugate great swathes of the realm. Such is the life of a Capricorn, and such is the life of a Dark Lord like the dastardly Valmore/Galerius.
Hard-working and ever-trusting in their own abilities, Capricorns are well-represented in the game in the towering and foreboding figure of Galerius. Armed with formidable skills like Fallen One (which decimates the HP of the opposing force) and Dark Armor (which can cancel opposing blows entirely), the Dark Lord has the ability to excel at any area of battle they set their minds to, and this extends to the everyday lives of any Capricorn.
11Aquarius (Air Sign, January 20 - February 18)
Wizard
The wizard is one of the most familiar fantasy tropes of all. They are typically intelligent, tactical fighters, slinging magic from a distance rather than clashing blades with their foes. The creative options offered by an array of magic spells allows them to tailor their combat approach to the enemies they face.
An Aquarius embodies all this intellect, versatility, and imagination. Unicorn Overlord’s Wizard (and subsequent Warlock promotion) is a purely offensive class, but its powerful spells offer interesting targeting options and potentially invaluable status side effects. Thunderous Strike, for instance, can hit and potentially Stun a whole row of opponents. An Aquarius is accomplished at taking unique measures to achieve their ends, which makes the Wizard a perfect fit.
10Pisces (Water Sign, February 19 - March 20)
Feathersword
A Pisces, too, will typically keep a Plan B, Plan C, and Plan D in mind, never rigidly adhering to just one approach to completing an objective. Adaptability is an important trait in which a Pisces excels. Caring and sharing souls, they will also take the needs and wishes of others into account when formulating their plans.
The Feathersword, personified by the righteous and loving Palevian Orthodoxy Angel Ochlys, feels very Pisces-like indeed. Formidable physical fighters they may be, but their highest stat is their Evasion and their standard attacks have powerful buffing and debuffing effects. Spiral Sword, in buffing the user’s Evasion by 20 and cutting that of the target by the same amount, allows a Feathersword to quickly snowball in effectiveness. They’re adaptable team members and valuable, influential allies, just like a Pisces.
9Aries (Fire Sign, March 21 - April 19)
Knight
Knights, typically depicted within heavy suits of armor and on horseback, often take a tankier role in combat. They are noble, powerful warriors, capable of turning the tide of combat if used effectively. A virtuous Aries, with a strong sense of purpose in all they do and a drive to prove themselves and perform well, might well see something of themselves reflected in the characters of two of Unicorn Overlord’s most prominent Knights: Clive and Adel. The camaraderie and rivalry between the pair is all too real and all too Aries.
This class is well known for its great offensive potential, with Assaulting Lance enabling more and more attacks by giving back a point of AP on defeating its target. The stacking quality of Cavalier Call’s passive buff allows cavalry-dominated formations to wreak real havoc, excelling as a true Aries should. Defensively, they can take physical hits well, but magic is rather more difficult to stomach. The Knight can be promoted into the Great Knight, enhancing their best Aries traits yet further.
8Taurus (Earth Sign, April 20 - May 20)
Hoplite
From the power of Cavalier Call cavalry teams to the true pillars of defensive strength in Unicorn Overlord, it’s the Hoplite (to be promoted into Legionnaire). With a Physical Defense and Guard Rate base stat of S, the Hoplite is the perfect match for a Taurus, an earth sign known for its resilience, steadfast refusal to back down, and the unstoppable wall that is the bull it represents.
The Hoplite, represented by early recruit Hodrick, can provide a Heavy Guard for more vulnerable allies with Heavy Cover, or multiple at once with Row Cover. Though they won’t be primary damage dealers, they still provide considerable damage with the likes of Sting, which hits harder if the Hoplite has taken a lot of hits. This Class makes for a dedicated and determined ally, as do its Taurus counterparts.
7Gemini (Air Sign, May 21 - June 20)
Witch
Geminis have a tendency to be excitable, fun-loving, and supportive, and rather deep thinkers beneath the surface. Much like Unicorn Overlord’s Wizard class, then, they fit a magical backline role well, balancing their power with a more direct capacity to boost their teammates.
The Witch Class excels at just that.
Commonly striking foes with icy spells that cause the Freeze status, the Witch (which can be promoted to Sorceress) can also allow an ally to perform a guaranteed Truestrike with Focus Sight, increase their Initiative with Quick Cast, or even make another Class’s next attack deal extra magic damage with Magick Conferal. The cunning and resourcefulness of a Gemini are also well represented here.
6Cancer (Water Sign, June 21 - July 22)
Priestess
Like Gemini, Cancer is also a Zodiac sign that emphasizes togetherness and protection. A Cancer may not lead from the front, but they will typically be there to back up friends and family, checking in on their welfare, and otherwise performing a vital role in the collective happiness of those closest to them. This isn’t to say that they’re not potent in and of themselves, though, as they can take care of themselves as well as others just as adeptly.
All of this makes the Priestess class (High Priestess being the promoted form) a natural fit for Cancer. The ability to set up Healing Assists in battle is a valuable one, butthe Priestess is far from just a healer. She can also strike enemies with magical attacks like Holy Light and Innocent Ray, which have high power and also boast the potentially-invaluable added effect of canceling enemy stat bonuses. A supportive class that’s far from boring or passive, the Priestess is a worthy Cancer indeed.
5Leo (Fire Sign, July 23 - August 22)
Lord
A commanding presence, a Leo will often take charge and make sure their opinions have been thoroughly expressed to all. Balancing their leadership qualities with a natural desire to bond with their companions, it’s not surprising that a Leo seems a fitting zodiac sign for Unicorn Overlord’s Lord class.
This is the role occupied by Alain (who can later be promoted to High Lord), the Cornian prince who is fighting to slowly assemble an army sizable enough to take back the realm from the man who used to be the loyal general Valmore. Like any Leo, Alain is an affable, empathetic, bold-yet-cautious leader.The Lord sports an appropriate and varied skillset, with a signature attack (Lean Edge) that will heal him in the right conditions, a defense-boosting guard for allies (Noble Guard) and the absurdly strong Valorous Order Valor Skill (though it’s a three-pointer) among his best assets.
4Virgo (Earth Sign, August 23 - September 22)
Paladin
A Virgo, too, is a deep thinker, and this can be a huge asset. Extraneous issues and annoyances are filtered away under their often-intense mental scrutiny, allowing them to devise logical ways forward. There could be no more fitting Unicorn Overlord class than the Paladin, as embodied by the kindly and protective Josef.
This bold and righteous warrior protected Alain during the Dark Lord’s initial attack on the royal family, saving his life and enabling him to return to form the resistance on growing up. Paladins have great mixed stats favoring Magic Defense, with a solid base B in Physical Attack. They are not primary attackers, but excellent secondary ones (Pursuit allows for a second attack on a foe that survived one from an ally). Josef, who serves as a crucial ally and advisor for Allain, is a perfect Virgo.
3Libra (Air Sign, September 23 - October 22)
Fighter
For a Libra, it can be difficult to reveal those true emotions. Rapport Conversations in Unicorn Overlord serve as ways to gradually learn more about the cast members and watch their relationships unfold, and early recruitLex (a very valuable defensive character)gradually demonstrates his generous, supportive, and positive side in his dealings with his comrades. A charming and friendly warrior, this Fighter’s finely-tuned skill set also complements the Libra’s tendency towards balance and order.
The Fighter (later available to promote to Vanguard) is more defensively inclined, with Guard Rate and Physical Defense base stats of S and average Physical Attack. Their primary asset, Arrow Cover, allows them to block projectiles from those pesky Hunters and their ilk, making them crucial companions for your flying and roguish characters (both of whom need to avoid arrows at all costs). The Fighter is a balanced frontliner who doesn’t seek the limelight but thrives when working in close proximity with allies, a natural Libra.
