Summary
Tomb Raider: Legend was just released for PlayStation 4 and 5, bringing the PS2 classic to modern audiences.
However, the launch isn’t going down well with fans, as it runs at 30fps in 480p, significantly worse quality than the ten-year-old PS3 ports, the backwards compatible Xbox version, and the much cheaper GOG release.

PlayStation 2 games ported to current-gen consoles typically have upscaled resolution, like theJaktrilogy, so it’s unclear why Legend didn’t receive similar treatment. Some speculate that it might be due to compatibility issues. But there are already clips surfacing of bizarre and distracting bugs anyway - just look atthis oneof a giant grey shape photobombing mid-gunfight.
Tomb Raider Fans Are Especially Unhappy With Legend’s Price
Some fans on the Tomb Raider subreddit and across Twitter are going as far as to call the re-release “false advertising”, lambasting the $30 price point.
According tostreamer and modder Lance McDonald, who is most well-known for his FromSoftware coverage, “When the [Legend] store page first went live, they were showing screenshots of the PS3 HD remastered version (which actually ran in HD with new character models).” It looks like those screenshots have since been removed.
Tomb Raider: Legend for PS4 and PS5 is a fu–ing mess. Everything is so blurry for no reason, PS1 games on PS5 look [sharper] than this game -@ulthimas.
“Way too overpriced for such a low-effort port,” one fan said. “In its current state, it’s worth $5 at best.”
“The people responsible for releasing this have no pride in their product,” another wrote. “There was no effort to put this out, let alone charge a high price. Where is the care? Shameful. Just for a quick money grab.”
Absolutely worthless to put the game out like this.
Sly Cooper, which also just launched on PS4/5, is also drawing backlash for similar reasons, with some even claiming that the PS4 version feels sped up. So, while we finally have two new games in the PS2 classics library for modern consoles, things aren’t all Bentley-dory inLara’s hunt for Excalibur.
