We have created aseparateguide to cover the ins and outs of the battle system. For tips and tricks having to do with Eiyuden’s combat, check out this guide here.

Getting A Handle On The Difficulty Settings

Off the bat, you will be asked if you want to begin the game on the “normal difficulty”. If you say “yes” you will completely miss the expansive, and modular, difficulty settings Eiyuden has to offer. So, what are all the options you have at your disposal? Well, for starters, you can select the hard difficulty setting, which we think is actually pretty well-balanced.But there are a number of additional modifiers you can select. These include…

Of these options, we think the “No HP Recovery Item U se in Battle” is by far the most interesting. It instantly makes team composition a bit more important, as you will want to balance out the number of healers you bring with you into battle. The rest are strictly for masochists, but there is nothing wrong with being a masochist! The most important element to keep in mind here is that you can always toggle these settings off once you start, but you can never toggle them on.This means that if you find that the hard difficulty setting is a bit much, you can always bump that setting down to normal, but if you find that normal is too easy, you can’t bump it up to hard.

Basically, there is no harm in beginning the game with some of these options toggled on. You may as well give any that you find intriguing a go.

How To Traverse The World Quicker

We’re going to keep this one short and sweet. While you have a decently fast run in Eiyuden, the lack of fast travel in the opening hours does mean you will be doing a lot of it. That being said, you will get the dash shoes in the Abandoned Mine, which will make youdramaticallyfaster.Put them on and run like the wind! You may want to delay your exploration of the world until you get them. If you want to maximize your time, that is.

Additionally, since Eiyuden Chronicle will encourage you to revisit dungeons in order to replenish your resources and locate recruitable characters, make sure you stock up on Rune of Returns. These will very conveniently send you directly to a dungeon’s entrance. Eventually, you will get the ability to quick travel, of course. However, you will need to complete the game’s first four or five dungeons before that unlocks.

Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes, The Werne Village Trading Post

Trading Posts Are A Valuable Source Of Baqua

In a game with a ton of characters who will all need their own equipment, you can often find your coffers running a little low. That is where trading posts come in. You see, trading posts sell items that you will then sell yourself atothertrading posts. The trick is that some items can be found for cheap in one location, and sold for a premium at another. This is a system first introduced in Suikoden 2, but Eiyuden does you a huge favor and will actually tell you which items are selling below or above their baseline market value.

There is, of course, a catch: in the early game you will find that you are low on inventory space, and you won’t have unlocked fast-travel yet, so you won’t be able to move between locations quickly. Also, while Werne Village does have a trading post, you won’t find a second one until you enter into the Treefolk village, which is a few hours into the game. soyou won’t be able to take advantage of trading during the opening hours of the game.

That being said, when you encounter a Trading Post, if you have the Baqua, grab anything that you see on sale.Just tash that stuff in your vault until you have unlocked the abiility to teleport.

Tips For Recruiting Characters

A massive part of this game is recruiting characters. So, here are some general tips for getting those recruits on your own…

The last piece of advice we have for you is basic, but necessary. Go everywhere. Early in the game, there is a recruit who you can get if you walk down the middle staircase in Etelweiss. This will only trigger if you travel up or down that staircase. So,verify you travel down every route, as you never know when you may trigger an event!

Eiyuden Chronicle, Opening a chest

Certain Items Can Only Be Found In Treasure Chests In Battle

One of the unique quirks in Eiyuuden is that certain random encounters will come with a treasure chest. Many of the items you will need to recruit certain characters can only be found in these chests. You will open them by targeting them with a character. However, this isn’t guaranteed to work, and that character will be the last to act if they are trying to open the chest. If you defeat the enemies before opening the chest, then you will have to wander around until you encounter the fight again.

You best strategy is obviously to kill all the enemies, but leave one alive. Ideally, you would incapacitate them with a sleep spell, but if that isn’t something you have access to, you can just draw the attention of the monster using a character with a taunt while the others try to open the chest. We’ve never had it take more than five attempts.

Sharpen Your Weapons!

Eiyuden has a pretty traditional armor system, so we don’t feel like many players will get lost with that one. The weapon system, on the other hand, is a little different. If you haven’t played a Suikoden game in the past, you are unlikely to have encountered anything like it.

For the record, when you are equipping your fighters with armor, youshouldbe prioritizing your front line. However, don’t completely ignore the back-row fighters, as they will still be getting hit too.

Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes, Red Throat Mountain Map

Unlike in most traditional JRPGs, you won’t be purchasing new weapons for your compatriots. Instead, you will be improving the weapons they already have.It is important to keep these weapons up-to-date, as improved weapons make a rather dramatic difference.Early blacksmiths will only be able to improve weapons up to a certain level, but as you push forward, you will encounter more skilled smiths capable of raising your weapon’s level even further.

Pay Close Attention To The Map

When actively attempting to recruit characters, you will find that certain characters are tucked away in little nooks and crannies. A great example of this is Iugo. This samurai is encountered in an Etelweiss bar. However, the bar he is occupying is in an alley that isprettywell concealed. Most players are likely to blow by that alley, and miss Iugo.

Yet, if you look at the map, you’ll see that there is a building you can enter just off to the side of the east-most staircase. That map is a valuable tool that will help you find a number of these otherwise sadistically hidden characters.

The map is also extremely useful for showing you the way to treasures in dungeons. As a rule of thumb, if there is a dead-end, you will likely find something valuable there.

Understanding EXP Gain

Generally speaking, Eiyuden Chronicle isn’t a game that requires any grinding. In fact, the way you gain EXP in general is pretty unique. In Eiyuden, characters benefit disproportionally when they are at a lower level than an enemy. However, the amount of EXP you gain falls dramatically as your party grows in strength. This may sound pretty standard, but it is far more exaggerated than what you would typically encounter in most RPGs.

Conveniently, this makes getting an underleveled character up to the average level a pretty trivial task.It isn’t uncommon to see a character jump ten levels if they are underleveled enough. There are also accessories you can acquire pretty early in the game that will further increase how much experience they gain. So, throw them in the back row, revive them if they catch a stray, and watch them go from pathetic to powerful in a handful of random encounters.

Eiyuden Chronicle Nowa With Innkeepers Standing Behind Him

If you are dead set on grinding, however, this systemdoesopen the door for giving yourself a sizable advantage, asyou will have opportunities to travel to dungeons that you aren’t necessarily supposed to interact with until later in the game.Even if the entrance to these dungeons is blocked off, you can still wander around in front of the obstacle and encounter some amped-up enemies that will reward you handsomely if you defeat them.

Early Inventory Management And Essential Items

Eiyuden has an inventory system that levels up over time. That does mean that in the early parts of the game, before you have increased your inventory, you will be limited to 30 slots. This can make for some tough calls, especially in the early game. If you enter a dungeon with most of those slots filled, you will almost certainly have to discard things. And if you aren’t being mindful early, you will almost certainly have this happen to you. But youdowant to have certain items on hand - especially if you are playing through the game on the hard difficulty. Here are the essential items, and how many we recommend having on hand…

Naturally, your priorities will change as you get better items. This is just a basic list for when you are in the early hours of the game.

You will want to keep your total inventory to less than a third. While working your way through a dungeon, you will end up stuffing your pockets with treasure. You don’t want to be faced with having to discard good stuff! So,visit your vault keeper at the inn and stash away all your unused rune-lenses and any excess equipment. Also, when you get new equipment, consider selling the old stuff. Sometimes you will want to keep it for other recruits, but most of the time you will want to get everyone the best stuff, and hand-me-downs are typically going to be a compromise saved for those times where you are particularly strapped for cash.
