Summary
While journeying through the wasteland in theFalloutuniverse, you might start to feel a little lonely and dangerous being by yourself. Between all the raiders, super mutants, and deathclaws that will constantly try to attack you, it would be a good idea to maybe have a little backup.
Fortunately, Fallout has provided a whole host of characters and companions that will follow you and help you out throughout the series. A good number of them are also very memorable and fan favorites, so if you get the chance to travel the wasteland with any of these folk, you’re in for a wild ride.

8Codsworth
The Butler Who Waited
Picture this, you wake up one day after almost two centuries of being frozen; you exit your vault to see that the world you once knew is now gone, and only ruins remain. Upon arriving at your home, the only remainder of a bygone era is your personal Mister Handy, still ready to serve you faithfully after all these years.
This is the story of Codsworth, the first companion you can recruit in the opening hours of Fallout 4. While not a particularly deep character, his story of loyalty and patience is quite sweet, despite the game’s more depressing aesthetic of a post-apocalyptic world.

7Charon
Freed From Bondage
When you meet Charon inFallout 3, he’s very striking right from the get-go. Charon is a ghoul and bouncer of the Ninth Circle found in the Underworld in the Capital Wasteland; he is bound to serve anyone who possesses his contract, and is practically a slave to his owner Ahzrukhal when you first meet.
You can purchase or earn Charon’s contract from Ahzrukhal either by spending a large amount of caps or by killing a certain individual for him. Once the contract is acquired, Charon ends his former employment by murdering Ahzrukhal in cold blood.

6Fawkes
An Intelligent Mutant
Super mutants are normally seen as incredibly aggressive or violent, often proven to be incapable of higher thought or peace. Fawkes, however, bucks that trend; he is a rational, even kind, super mutant who can vaguely remember his past as a vault dweller of Vault 87 in the Capital Wasteland.
He is tortured by his inability to remember his past completely, and his dark origins can be seen as one of the saddest parts of Fallout 3’s narrative. Provided you have good karma, you’re able to recruit Fawkes after escaping Raven Rock.

5Preston Garvey
A One “Minuteman”
Another character you meet early on inFallout 4’s story, Preston Garvey, is a member of the Commonwealth Minutemen faction found throughout the Boston area. As you enter Concord, you will become involved with the minutemen andhelp defend them from a group of raiders and then, later, a deathclaw attack.
Preston Garvey has a strong sense of justice and morals, and will not abide by the player working with raiders or committing evil actions. If you manage to raise your affinity with him, he is also able to be romanced.

4Robert MacCready
All Grown Up
MacCready made his first appearance in Fallout 3 as the mayor of a town of children called Little Lamplight, where the player can interact with him there throughout the events of the game, and he plays a role in getting the player into Vault 87. Sometime after the events of Fallout 3, he leaves the D.C. area and wanders the wasteland, eventually making his way up to Boston and the Commonwealth.
After witnessing a confrontation between him, Winlock, and Barnes, the player can recruit MacCready for at least 250 caps, and his companion quests involve dealing with the Gunners and finding a cure for his son’s illness. MacCready also makes many references to growing up in the Capital Wasteland as well.

3ED-E
Patriotism Protocols Activated
While wandering the Mojave Wasteland duringFallout: New Vegas, you’re able to discover a broken Enclave robot named ED-E that will join you as a companion when repaired. As long as you have a high enough science skill, repair skill, or the appropriate parts, fixing it is no problem.
ED-E can be upgraded throughout the story of New Vegas, either by bringing it to the Followers of the Apocalypse or the Brotherhood of Steel. When spotting hostile targets, it can also play a battle fanfare as a sound, which can help you identify you’re under attack more quickly, makingit one of the most beloved robots in the series for that reason.

2Boone
A Tale Of Revenge
Craig Boone is a former NCR First Recon sharpshooterwho serves as a night guard in Novac in Fallout: New Vegas. He has an incredibly troubled past and history and is seeking revenge on Caesar’s Legion and anyone else involved in the murder of his wife and unborn child.
His recruitment quest involves you discovering the person involved with selling out his wife Carla to the Legion, and then him exacting his revenge by killing them. If you gather the evidence and bring him the correct person, Boone will join you as a companion right on the spot, and his story is one of the most impactful companion quests in the series.

1Dogmeat
The Goodest Boy In The Wasteland
The most famous companion, and one that has been around since the earliest days of the franchise, is Dogmeat. This canine companion is the only true neutral companion in the games, loving and following the player regardless of their actions or alignment.
Dogmeat has taken many different forms and appearances throughout the games, but will always be your most faithful friend in the end. Interestingly, you can still take advantage of certain perks, like Lone Wanderer, while traveling with Dogmeat; he is a good boy and should be treated well at all costs.
