Summary

Dragons are the apex challenges of any video game. They are the pinnacle of the challenge, and often they’re the testing ground to see how well you’ve learned and played with the mechanics throughout the playthrough. Dragons are either the final boss or the secondary threat to something else, but their presence raises the stakes for you to get stronger.

Fighting powerful dragon bosses is the highlight of many action-packed adventures and claiming your victory will be a hard-fought and a well-earned achievement. Several common places to hit dragons are the head, wings, and chest where the heart resides. Several things to avoid tend to be their tails, swiping claws, killer bites, and devastating breath attacks.

Fighting a King Gleeok in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

10King Gleeok

The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

Outside the climatic boss fights with Ganondorf and his second phase, King Gleeok has the most health, defense, and damaging opportunities of any boss or mini-boss in Tears of the Kingdom. you may come across this fearsome beast at any point in your adventure in Hyrule. However, it’s advisable to have at least 15 hearts worth of health, several upgraded armor, and formidable fused weapons before fighting it.

King Gleeok combines the attacks and abilities of the other three Gleeok types, with one fire head, one ice head, and one thunder head. Because of their elemental mastery, expect thunderstrikes to target you if you have metal armor and weapons, blocks of Ice falling from the sky, and flaming infernos hampering your path. To combat such a fierce bombardment of elements, it’s best to have a Lynel bow with Keese eyes attached to bring them down for melee attacks.

The Ancient Dragon in Dragon’s Crown

9Ancient Dragon

Dragon’s Crown Pro

The endgame boss of Dragon’s Crown, the Ancient Dragon is also one of the most powerful creatures you and your band of adventurers will face. To reach this fearsome adversary, you must gather nine talismans and cast a rune spell to reveal the hidden Illusionary Lands, where the three goddesses imprisoned three ancient dragons representing different difficulties.

He has a large amount of health and can pack a fierce punch. Only three areas where you’re able to attack him are the head and two clawed hands, and a formidable array of attacks from tornados and elemental blasts to breathing fire across the area. He also has a devastating one-hit kill fire blast that will vaporize you and your entire team unless you take cover behind two corners of the battlefield.

The Dragon in Dragon’s Dogma 2

8The Ataashi

Dragon Age: Inquisition

The Ataashi is the strongest of the High Dragons you will face in Dragon Age: Inquisition. She appears in the Tresspasser DLC for Inquisition and is an optional boss that can be avoided if you decide to free her from the Qunari. If you decide to take her on instead, she is a fearsome adversary to take on.

The Ataashi utilizes poison as its chief element and is pretty much a tougher and stronger form of the other High Dragons you encounter in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Having tons of items can help you balance out the effects of her bigger attacks. Of all the dragons here, she is the one you might rather have as an ally for your cause.

Kalameet the viscous dragon of the Caverns

7The Dragon

Dragon’s Dogma 2

The red dragon that appears in Dragon’s Dogma acts and behaves somewhat differently from Grigori in the original game, yet it shares a similar function as the penultimate climatic battle. The Dragon fights very similarly tomany of the other dragonkin monsters you encounter throughout the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2. The only difference is the sheer size and power of The Dragon.

The choice of even battling The Dragon alters the trajectory of the story, since much of the story is about confronting and challenging the cycle you are trapped in. Should you choose to battle the beast, you will face the classic climatic battle and be driven to endure several fearsome attacks and classical breath attacks. With the Godsbane sword, you can completely skip this boss only to get trapped in a horrifically twisted version of the world where the Brine originates from, along with other darker forms of dragons.

The Darkwater Midir in the depths of the Abyss.

6Shinryu

Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT

The final boss of Dissidia NT, Shinryu is a mighty dimension-hopping dragon known as the ‘Divine Dragon’ in other Final Fantasy titles. In the story of Dissidia, Shinryu conspires with Cosmos and Chaos to maintain the original cycle of conflict that summoned heroes and villains from every main Final Fantasy installment. When the original cycle ended, Shinryu disappeared until the new conflicts against Materia and Spiritus brought him back to finish what he started.

Shinryu is fought in two phases. The first phase fights in a way reminiscent of the classic boss fights from Final Fantasy 5, using Tidal Wave and other formidable elemental moves that are familiar from his moveset in other games. After defeating him in this state, Shinryu becomes a stationary draconic monster that can devastate your HP with Trinity. Even though he’s easier to hit in this phase, Shinryu has a lot of health and needs to be approached with caution.

5Deathwing The Destroyer

World Of Warcraft: Cataclysm

Also known by his old name Naltharion the Earth-Warder, Deathwing is a massive, destructive black dragon set to destroy the realms of Azeroth after obtaining the power of the DragonSoul. After years trapped in his ancient prison, Deathwing escaped and caused the events of the Cataclysm expansion. His rampage ravaged Azeroth with earthquakes, floods, and fires. Sometimes, when you explore areas in Azeroth, he will appear and annihilate everything in the region.

Deathwing is fought in two phases, one in the skies of Azeroth and the second in the Heart of the Maelstrom. In the skies of Azeroth, your ‘battle’ with Deathwing involves being on his back and destroying pieces of his armor while fighting off the corruption that emerges from him. Knocking him into the Maelstrom has him unveil a terrifying multi-tentacled form that you target in the boss battle.

4Black Dragon Kalameet

Dark Souls

A large, dark-scaled dragon that can be optionally fought in Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss, Kalameet is also said to be one of the last of its kind left after the great war between the dragons and the wielders of the Souls of Lords. At first, Kalameet is an environmental hazard to avoid, similar to the Hellkite Drake, just flying in the area and sweeping streams of dark fire. Once it’s shot down by Hawkeye Gough, you can have a legitimate fight with the black dragon.

Kalameet is a very traditional dragon fight in Dark Souls, sharing the body type of atypical dragons. Kalameet can charge, swipe its tail, and lunge at you along with unleashing streams of dark flames that can spread absurd distances that you must avoid. The most dangerous attack Kalameet can do is use the bright red ‘eye’ in the middle of its head to curse you, doubling all the damage you take in the fight.

3Darkeater Midir

Dark Souls 3

Midir was once a noble Archdragon tasked to wage an endless battle against the monsters of the Abyss. Sadly, just like with Artorias and his allies, Midir became corrupted and soon became the very monstrosity he was bound to fight. As the Darkeater, he is an ever-present threat in the Ringed City DLC, bombarding your progress as you trek the mountainside regions until you reach the Church of Filianore.

As a boss, Midir is a blind flailing berserker who is difficult to predict, anticipate, and close the distance for the fight. He also has a viscous breath attack that can change from a flame blast into a focused beam. From tail swipes to swiping bites and grapples, closing the distance against Midir is a dangerous gamble. To take on this juggernaut of a dragon, it’s best to equip weapons made with the souls of Abyss Watchers, since it’s weak to anti-abyss weapons.

2Dragonlord Placidusax

Elden Ring

The oldest and mightiest of the ancient dragons in the Lands Between.Placidusax is also the Elden Lordof an era long before the emergence of the Erdtree and Godfrey. He has two heads that can spew out gold beams and fire. He also has a stump for a third head, suggesting that in his prime of glory, Dragonlord Placidusax had three heads for multiple breath attacks.

Outside of his typical dragon abilities, Placidusax also has several rune attacks, including a massive lightning explosion that your only hope to escape is to run away as far as possible. He’s also surprisingly agile, flying around to zap you with spells and teleporting through storm clouds to swipe at your blind spots, similar to Starscourge Radahn. With devastating attacks, agile movements, and a tankload of health, this dragon is a fearsome challenge.

1Fatalis

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

The final challenge in the post-game updates of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne,Fatalis is the hardest and most powerful monsterto face in the entire Monster Hunter series. Iceborne updated the fearsome dragon with a plethora of fearsome attacks, sinister intelligence, and a resilient hide capable of enduring most attacks throughout the body. It also doesn’t help that you would have 30 precious minutes to slay this wrathful monster.

Once Fatalis is at 75 percent health, it’ll fly into the air and unleash a devastating stream of fire that you need to take cover from. At 50 percent health, Fatalis will do this again, and then enter a ‘Hellfire’ state where its breath attacks are doubled in size and power. Even after breaking its head to weaken its ‘Hellfire’ state, Fatalis is still a harrowing battle to complete.
