WhileFallout 76is the earliest entry in the timeline, it wastes no time adding more and more new creatures for players to fight against. The Lost, a new enemy faction added in Skyline Valley, is a new variant of Ghoul that roams the land with a strange electrical glow.

This new Ghoul variant is rather strange, since, for the most part, they are as aggressive as a Feral Ghoul but capable of speech and using tools. Just who are the Lost, why are they called that way, and how did they end up with an electrical current flowing through their bodies?

Vault 63

Before talking about the Lost, you need to know about Vault 63and the experiments planned to take place within. The project in it was led by Hugo Stolz, and it involved meteorological and weapon experiments to safeguard Vault-Tec’s investments in the post-war world.

In reality,it was all an elaborate excuseso Hugo and his wife, Cassidy, could haveshelter from the imminent nuclear fallout. The money to build the shelter was lacking, and Hugo wasn’t great at administrating what little income they had, soby the time the bombs dropped, Vault 63 wasn’t finished.

While the dwellers of Vault 63 had managed to finish the Vault door, it wasn’t properly sealed, sothe radiation from the bombs made its way inside. This killed many of the dwellers, andthe survivors ended up as Ghouls.

The Weather Machine

As the years passed, the Vault 63 dwellers got used to their Ghoulish form, since it came with the benefit of longevity, but not without its risks.Their main concern was turning Feraland attacking their friends and family, a fate far worse than death.

By chance, the dwellers found thatexposure to the Weather regulating machine made the effects of Feralization slower, but it didn’t stop it altogether.Hugo Stoltz and his wife both became Ghoulswhile inside Vault 63, but as Cassidy turned more and more Feral each day,Hugo decided to use the Weather machineto heal her.

The electrical power used by the machine was already great, butHugo turned it up to its max potency, so Cassidy could be healed. The electrical shock changed not only Cassidy, but Hugo and many of the other dwellers as well, giving them a strange electrical hue.

The Lost

This gave birth to the Lost, a Ghoul variant that seems to exist betweena regular Ghoul and a Feral one. Like a Feral Ghoul, they attack nearly everyone except their own Lost kind, but unlike Ferals, the Lost arestill capable of speech and using tools.

All in all,a Lost is far more dangerous than a Feral Ghoul, since they are harder to outsmart, andthey can use all sorts of weaponsand power armors they can find. This problem was only present in Vault 63, butHugo activates the Weather machine a second time, leading to many Lostrunning rampant through Skyline Valley.

Hugo reactivated the machine because Cassidy, while she was spared the fate of going Feral, ended up being comatose.Hugo is part of the Lost as well, buthe retains his sanity, and seems to be able tocontrol the other Lost to an extent.
