Summary

The Eldrazi are one of the former “big bads” of theMagic: The Gatheringuniverse. They were a major villain during their arc, and though most were defeated and destroyed, their legacy lives on as some of the most iconic creatures in the series.

Eldrazi are primarily colorless creatures, being one of the few to actually require colorless mana to cast. In Commander, since colorless is not a part of a color identity, you can play Edrazi cards in any color, regardless of whether the commander is colorless or not. However, for colorless commanders, you can only play colorless cards.

MTG Morophon the Boundless card and art background

10Morophon, The Boundless

Changling Eldrazis

Morophon, The Boundless discounts your Eldrazi spells by getting rid of the need to spend the colored mana they have, as most Eldrazi spells don’t have more than one colored mana in their costs, if any at all. In addition, they all get a little stat boost, beneficial for the smaller Eldrazi to become threats in their own right.

Morophon gives you access to all five colors, letting you play every Eldrazi and Eldrazi support card in the game. Morophon itself is easy to cast, since you don’t need color, and can benefit from Eldrazi support since it’s considered an Eldrazi itself.

MTG Jhoira of the Ghitu

9Jhoira Of The Ghitu

Time (Counters) For Eldrazi

There are two traits Eldrazi creatures tend to have, being devoid of color andcosting a lot of mana to cast. Jhoira of the Ghitu is a way to get around their casting cost, only needing two mana to suspend them to cast them for free once all their counters are gone.

Jhoira works great as an Eldrazi commander since it gives you access to blue and counterspells. Since Eldrazi cards tend to be a high mana investment, having access to counterspells is important to make sure that they stick to the battlefield.

MTG Svella Ice Shaper card and art background

8Svella, Ice Shaper

Icy Eldrazi

Svella, Ice Shaper is a ramp-based commander, working to have enough mana to use its ability to cast a spell for free from the top four cards of your library. Svella’s other activated ability helps you ramp, giving you extra mana rocks to work with on top of the ones you already have.

Cheating around casting costs is a big part of the Eldrazi’s playstyle, as otherwise, you need a ton of mana utilize them. With Svella’s ability, you can cast Eldrazi creatures at instant speed, which is especially useful since some have effects when they’re cast. Even if Svella gets removed, the Icy Manalith tokens stay to play Eldrazi normally.

MTG Satoru Umezawa card and art background

7Satoru Umezawa

Eldrazi With Ninjutsu

Satoru Umezawa turns your small unblockable creaturesinto massive Eldrazi threats for four mana. When you use the ninjutsu ability, Satoru Umezawa puts a card into your hand to replace the creature you played, letting you either get another Eldrazi card or another unblockable creature to get another one down.

While you do need Satoru Umezawa on the battlefield to cheat Eldrazi onto the battlefield too, since Satoru only costs three mana, you can get an Eldrazi on the battlefield very early which can be hard for many decks to come back from if the Eldrazi is powerful enough.

MTG Rakdos Lord of Riots card and art background

The big downsite of Satoru is that, as Ninjutsu has creatures enter the battlefield attacking, you get neither cast nor attack triggers, which Eldrazi are known for.

6Rakdos, Lord Of Riots

Burn Opponents, Cast Eldrazi

With Rakdos, Lord of Riots' ability, it’s possible to cast Eldrazi spells for free if you’re able to deal enough damage to your opponents, so long as there are no specific mana requirements.

Decks with Rakdos, Lord of Riots at the helm tend to play cardsthat can do burn damage easily(often on a permanent so you can reuse it every turn) to guarantee you’ll actually be able to cast your commander. This also helps you deal damage to your opponents to steepen the discount Rakdos gives you for your creature spells that turn.

MTG Kruphix God of Horizons card and art background

5Kruphix, God Of Horizons

The Ramp Never Ends

Many Eldrazi creatures require colorless mana, and Kruphix, God of Horizons is a way to turn colored mana into colorless. Kruphix is Simic (green/blue),which is the color of rampand allows you to get a turn of mana sources onto the battlefield at once so you have a plethora of mana to work with.

There’s little downside to tapping all of your lands, as even if you don’t use the mana it’s converted into colorless mana with Kruphix. A common thing to do is to tap all of your lands for mana before your turn starts to have an excess of mana to work with when your next turn begins.

MTG Animar Soul of Elements card and art background

4Animar, Soul Of Elements

Turn Counters Into Creatures

Animar, Soul of Elements wants +1/+1 counters on it since it will discount all your future creature spells for each one. Since Eldrazi have high casting costs, you’ll want Animar loaded up with counters to make them much cheaper and hold your mana up for interaction.

With Animar’s passive and triggered abilities, those would make them good enough for Animar to be a great Eldrazi commander. However, it comes with the added bonus of having protection from the two colors it isn’t, making it harder for certain decks to actually be able to remove it, colors with the most common removal spells.

MTG Kozilek the Great Distortion card and art background

3Kozilek, The Great Distortion

The Titan Of Eldrazi

The first actual Eldrazi on this list, and one of the three Eldrazi titans, Kozilek, the Great Distortion is also one of the most popular Eldrazi commanders. It has a way to protect itself byletting you discard cards to counter cardswith the same mana value, and refreshes your hand when you cast it.

Kozilek does cost a lot of mana to be able to cast, but once it hits the field it becomes a menace for your opponents to deal with. It’s hard to be upset if it ever gets removed or countered, as that just means you’ll be able to draw cards yet again when you recast it.

MTG Jodah Archmage Eternal card and art background

2Jodah, Archmage Eternal

Eldrazi Spells For WUBRG

Jodah, Archmage Eternal lets you turn the casting cost of any Eldrazi spell into one mana of every color. This is a great substitution effect, as many of the best Eldrazi spells cost over eight mana. While needing to use all five colors may seem steep, there are many support cards that make it trivial to generate all that mana.

SinceJodah’s color identity has all five colors, you have access to every card legal in Commander. This gives you access to all the five-color support cards, and the Eldrazi support cards across the color pie as well.

MTG Zhulodok, Void Gorger card and art background

1Zhulodok, Void Gorger

Cascading Eldrazi

The face commander of the Eldrazi preconstructed deck for Commander Masters, Zhulodok, Void Gorger is one of the best Eldrazi commanders out there. While its effect isn’t technically Eldrazi support, most of them do cost seven or more mana, letting you cascade twice when you cast them. You don’t have access to any colors, but there is enough colorless cards in the game this isn’t an issue.

Eldrazi decks tend to be “all or nothing” since you need to dedicate your resources to casting your Eldrazi, but Zhulodok’s ability brings in two extra cards being cast so you can push your advantage further.
