Summary
While fans still argue for their favorite game within the series, like Fallout: New Vegas,Fallout 4is nonetheless a solid title withplenty of NPCs to romanceor recruit, large settlements to build, a surprising number ofthings to do after you beat the game, and of course, a few different factions you can side with.
While the Brotherhood Of Steel only offers four different ranks you can progress through in Fallout 4, despite having a wide variety of NPCs that reveal a much deeper, militaristic hierarchy, like Scribes or Lancer-Knights, we’ll walk you through the benefits and privileges afforded to each position, in detail, within this power-armor loving faction.
If you’ve never finished the Brotherhood of Steel questline, this is your polite warning that the information below goes into deep detail about every quest, rank, and the notable rewards and outcomes associated with this faction.
4Initiate
Because Every New Recruit Starts At The Bottom, And Rhys Hates You
Whether it was after you obliterated Kellog in Fort Hagen during the Reunions main story quest, and were immediately greeted by the Brotherhood’s massive blimp, the Prydwen, or you helped Paladin Danse fight off waves of Ghouls from Cambridge Police Station, you get acquainted with the faction one way or another.
To earn the rank of Initiate, you have to help Paladin Danse with two required Brotherhood quests:Fire Support, located and completed at Cambridge Police Station, andCall to Arms, which takes you to Arcjet Systems to find aDeep Range Transmitter. Including items that can be found during these quests, becoming an Initiate provides a number of notable rewards, such as:
While becoming an Initiate doesn’t grant you many privileges within the Brotherhood itself quite yet, it paves the road for knighthood, which provides the most benefits, perks, and access to a variety of traders when compared to every other rank; don’t give up, push a bit harder for a promotion.
3Knight
Numerous Upgrades And Privileges Fit For The Position
The Lost Patrol quest isentirely optional and not required to become a Knight, although you may want to do it for the rewards.
You receive350 base EXP, theSurvivor’s Specialpistol if you convinced Paladin Brandis to return, and either200 capsfrom Danse or an excellentcombat armor chest piecefromLancer Captain Kells.
To become a Knight, you have to do a few things. First, as a part of the Semper Invicta quest, you have toagree to join Danse’s recon team, help Knight Rhyscleanse a part of the Commonwealth, and find animportant technological relicfor Scribe Haylen.
Beyond this, all you have to do iscomplete the Shadow of Steel quest, which involvestriggering the Prydwen’s arrivalfrom the rooftop of Fort Hagen after killing Kellog, listening toMilitary Frequency AF95on your Pipboy, and attending Elder Maxon’s address.
Now that you’ve earned the title of Knight, you gain a number of incredible perks, privileges, and rewards, including:
If you’re more of a pragmatist, rather than someone who’s carefully evaluating the Brotherhood’s impact on the Commonwealth, becoming a Knight is a relatively quick and easy way to set yourself up for success. Also, this might be a good time toplan out your perks for the mid to late game.

Before you leave The Institute, make sure youload the Network Scanner holotope into one of the available terminals to complete the Outside the Wire quest; it’d be a bit awkward to have to come back.
Next, you’re going to have toscrounge the Commonwealth for a high-powered magnet, buildfourelectromagnetic actuatorsin theBoston Airport, locatea stockpile of nuclear bombs at Sentinel Site Prescott, andactivate Liberty Primeto complete the quest Liberty Reprimed.
Finally, the last quest you’ll have to complete to become a Paladin isBlind Betrayal, an often messy, sad, and shocking twist in the Brotherhood questline for many players that involvesputting Paladin Danse’s fate in your hands, and for some, the Brotherhood’s operational ethics into question.
