There are many familiar faces to send you down nostalgia lane and even more bosses that weren’t even there before. So, which bosses are the most iconic? The answer may surprise you. Here are the ten best and most memorable bosses in the remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

Hooktail asking Mario to sniff her feet in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake.

10Hooktail

The Dragon On The Cover

Hooktail is a pretty decent boss for the early game. While not the strongest dragon you will face in Paper Mario, her personality steals the show. One of her attacks actually has her eating members of the audience to regain health.

While she may seem intimidating due to her sheer size, she actually has a pretty funny weakness. She absolutely hates frogs and the noises they make. Looks like this is a job for one of yoursound effect-changing badges.

Macho Grubba Enters The Stage in Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door

9Macho Grubba

Buffs Everywhere

Macho Grubba may be getting older, but he’s not down for the count. In a fairly challenging boss battle with interesting mechanics, Macho Grubba will come at you with devastating attacks. The only bright side is that he needs to power up before doing so, giving you at least some time to come up with a plan to beat him.

Macho Grubba takes a few turns to buff his own strength. This can increase both his attack and defense and even make him more evasive. Make sure Mario’s defense is high enough before challenging this boss.

Cortez Battles Mario in Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door

8Cortez

Most Frightening Pirate

Deep within Keelhaul Key lays the ghostly and terrifying pirate king, Cortez. Don’t even attempt to steal his treasure, or he will come after you. Using his ghostly powers, he can control multiple weapons at once, including a devastating hook that can inflict poison.

If you want to survive this supernatural encounter and obtain the Crystal Star, then make sure to go after his weapons first. These can easily overpower you with successive hits. Dealing with them first will leave Cortez defenseless. This is a unique fight and one of the coolest bosses in Super Mario.

Magnus Von Grapple 2.0 in Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door

7Magnus Von Grapple 2.0

Overconfidence Is His Weakness

This isn’t the first time Mario faces off against an enemy in some kind of machine. This also isn’t the first time Magnus Von Grapple shows his face around the corner. This time, with more health and stronger attacks, he can be pretty overconfident.

Luckily, you may beat him easily the same way you did the first time by destroying his rocket-powered fists. While he can still attack you in many ways, removing the fists will tip the battle in your favor and send Von Grapple back to the drawing board

Bowser and Kammy in Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door

6Bowser And Kammy

Bowser A Side Villain?

Bowser is usuallythe hardest boss in any Mario game. While he may not be the strongest this time around, it’s always welcome to see Bowser and a fellow Magickoopa take the stage. For this boss battle, Bowser and Kammy work together to stop the pesky plumber from progressing.

Kammy can heal Bowser and cause other status effects on you, while Bowser provides the physical pain. What makes these two charming, though, is how they think they’re the main villains this time around. Looks like old habits die hard.

Mario and Koops fighting Rawk Hawk in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake

5Rawk Hawk

Coolest Buildup To A Boss Fight

Rawk Hawk is a fun boss. While his fight is dynamic, it’s also the setting that makes the fight memorable, as you don’t go face-to-face with him right away. Instead, you enter a tournament in the Glitz Pitz for a chance to fight him.

This creates a great buildup for the fight against Rawk Hawk as the characters on the sideline cheer to see the final confrontation. He even comes with his own metal theme. Truly, one of the most memorable bosses in the game.

Bonetail emerges from the shadows in Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door

4Bone Tail

The Ultimate Dragon

Safeguarding the Pit of 100 Trials, Bonetail has a bone to pick with Mario. The eldest of the dragon siblings, Bone Tail is not as talkative as Hooktail, however, they are the most menacing. What makes this boss such an accomplishment to beat is the long gauntlet inside the Pit of 100 Trials that you need to get past first.

With boss music that almost sounds like you’re encountering a Dark Souls boss, Bone Tail is one of the coolest skeleton dragons in gaming.

Prince Mush and Jolene in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

3Prince Mush

Exclusive New Boss Battle

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door hastwo exclusive bosses in the remake. The first is Prince Mush, who originally didn’t do much. This time around, he has a unique stance mechanic that he can use now that he has a new boss fight.

These stances allow Mush to evade attacks both on the ground and in the air. Mush can also attack using a dashing punch and a flashing dropkick. Safeguarding against them can throw off Mush’s stance. This is your chance to start attacking.

Mario and Goombella fighting Whacka

2Whacka

Cutest Boss Battle

Whacka is a cute little mole-like critter that appears in multiple locations. you’re able to whack it on the head to get Whacka Bumps, which can restore your HP. Eventually, though, Whacka will relocate to the bottom of the Pit of 100 Trials.

If you still insist on bopping it on the head for those sweet items, be warned, Whacka will have had enough and attack. This is one ofthe funniest boss battlesin the post-game. Even funnier still is the fact that Whacka is actually quite strong and can heal itself while boosting its own attack.

Princess Peach Possessed By The Shadow Queen in Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door

1Shadow Queen

Princess Peach’s Best Look

Princess Peach Showtime has plenty of cool outfits, but one ofthe best looks for Princess Peachcomes from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. When she is possessed by an immortal demon, Princess Peach becomes the Shadow Queen.

This gothic outfit absolutely slaps, but don’t get too distracted. The Shadow Queen packs a punch and can even trigger a unique game over sequence where she tempts Mario to join her. Too bad the offer isn’t real. She will instantly change her mind if you say yes.
