While well-loved, the lateSNEStitle was assumed to have been left firmly in Nintendo’s past since it only sold a little more than two million copies. A roaring success for some games, but not one with Mario as the star.

The decision to remake Super Mario RPG for younger fans and those of us longing for a new version alike was clearly a good one as the 2023 title has already outsold the original by one million copies. Nintendo is clearly keen to keep that number rising as the five-month-old game is already on sale. Usually $59.99, you can pick up a brand new copy of Super Mario RPG for just $44.80 at Walmart. You can also get it for $44.99 at GameStop, though there it’s not reduced as the lower priced copies are pre-owned ones.

Super Mario RPG on Nintendo Switch is a remake of the game with the same name, originally released on the SNES in 1996. A completely reimagined version for an entirely new generation, it includes locations and characters even some of the most experienced Mario fans will have never seen before.

Anyone who owns a Switch will know that Mario games getting a price cut is a rare occurrence. Games with Mario as the star not only tend to sell no matter what, but unlike pretty much every other game in the industry, those high sales numbers are maintained for months, if not years.Super Mario OdysseyandMario Kart 8 Deluxe, for instance, were both released during the Switch’s launch year seven years ago, yet both are frequently among the top ten-selling games across all platforms in any given week.
