Star Wars Outlaws' creative director, Julian Gerighty, has responded to theUnchartedcomparisons, calling them “wonderful” but noting that it wasn’t a purposeful inspiration.

When Star Wars Outlaws was revealed last year, a lot of fuss was made about the fact that it’s going to be the first open-worldStar Warsgame. You’d think with that unique position, a lot of comparisons would be made to games likeGrand Theft Auto, but the most common comparison was that Outlaws looked like a Star Wars version of Naughty Dog’sUncharted.

Outlaws has already been compared to Uncharted ever since it was first revealed as a third-person shooter with platforming elements, but those comparisons only increased atSummer Game Festthanks to a demo that didn’t have open-world sections. Our own Editor-in-Chief, Stacey Henley, even made the same point after getting to play it for herself.

Star Wars Outlaws Creative Director Responds To Uncharted Comparions

Uncharted might be the main game that everyone is comparing Star Wars Outlaws to right now, but it turns out that wasn’t meant to be the case.VGC had the chance to speak to Outlaws' creative director Julian Gerighty at Summer Game Fest, where they asked him directly what he thought of the comparisons.

When asked what he thought of being called “Star Wars Uncharted”, Gerighty said that Naughty Dog’s series wasn’t the main point of reference for Star Wars Outlaws. While it wasn’t purposeful, Gerighty seems to be happy with the comparison, noting that if you’re going to be compared to anybody, it might as well be one of the best in the business.

“It wasn’t necessarily our reference point. It’s such a wonderful game to be compared to, if you’re going to be compared to somebody, it might as well be the best in the industry. Naughty Dog and what they do is absolutely brilliant, I’ll take it. It wasn’t the point of origin.”

A lot of the comparisons that are being made between Star Wars Outlaws and Uncharted are mainly because the sections that media got to go hands-on with at Summer Game Fest were mostly linear setpieces. Hopefully, when the full game releases and its open world can be properly explored, we’ll see fewer comparisons to Uncharted and more about what makes Outlaws special on its own merit.
