According to prominent Sega leaker @MbKKssTBhz5,Sonic Frontiers 2is currently in development.
“The title is a sequel to Frontiers in gameplay style,” they tweeted. “But the name might change. Frontiers was Rangers until it was announced.”
Earlier this year, Frontiers developer Yuki Takahashi saidthe first game was Sonic Team’s last chanceand that if they failed, there was “no way out”.
Thankfully, it won fans over, despite the risky gambit of taking Sonic open-world, and quickly becamethe best-selling 3D game in the series. A sequel was inevitable.

In the same interview, Takahashi revealed that Frontiers took five years to develop, using an in-house engine called the “Hedgehog”. If the sequel follows a similar cycle, we won’t get our hands on it until at least 2027.
Frontiers 2 will likely be much bigger in scope than its predecessor as, last year, Sega said the first game greatly exceeded its expectations and that the sequel will be “proceeding with abigger budget”.
As for what we can expect from the game itself, director Morio Kishimoto said in a Q&A thathe is “very interested” in seeing old comic book charactersmake an appearance, so perhaps we’ll see more obscure favourites pop up. Of course,fans are also itching to see Shadow the Hedgehog(who is having a major resurgence this year), but whether he speeds into the world of Frontiers, we’ll just have to wait and see.
What Other Sonic Games Are In Development?
While we wait for Frontiers 2, Sega reportedly has a few other Sonic games in the works.
@MbKKssTBhz5 claims that a “new Sonic spin-off title” will be released this year for mobile, similar in style toFall Guys. They also alleged that a new Sonic Chao game and sports title are in development, also for mobile.
Reportedly, we can expect the Fall Guys game to launch this Summer, while the Chao title will be a Netflix exclusive and the sports game an Apple Arcade one.
