Summary

AfterDisney Lorcanareached the climax of its first year with Ursula’s Return, Ravensburger has revealed that the game’s next set will feature a worldwide celebration of the Sea Witch’s defeat.

Shimmering Skies kicks off the second year of Lorcana by introducing characters from Wreck-it Ralph for the first time, alongside new mechanics, and undoubtedly more shakeups to its meta.

Starter Decks Shimmering Skies

Though Wreck-it Ralph has cameoed in Lorcana already with theRise of the Floodborncard Pick a Fight, Shimmering Skies will see much more of the movies make their way to the game. As revealed in the most recent Lorecast, we’ll at the very least be getting cards for Wreck-it Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz, while Bad-Anon features as a location card that’ll be incredibly spicy for any Villain-centric deck.

Of course, alongside Wreck-it Ralph we’ll also be seeing plenty of characters who’ve been mainstays in Lorcana since day one. Moana’s most famous song finally gets a card with You’re Welcome, and Donald Duck and Elsa get new versions too.

Prince John, Gold Lover Promo

Interestingly, Kronk gets a Floodborn card in Kronk, Head of Security. Considering there’s only two Kronks in the game at the moment, perhaps this means we’ll be seeing more of him in Shimmering Skies?

Story-wise, this set picks up after Ursula’s defeat during the last set. With the Great Illuminary seemingly safe, parties and celebrations have kicked off across Lorcana. However, new threats are emerging, and Ravensburger has promised Shimmering Skies will see the start of “a new mystery” that will likely see us through the next year.

Introduction to Evil Lorcana

This set’ll also have two more Starter decks: an Emerald/Steel deck featuring Kronk and Scar, and a Ruby/Amethyst one using Ralph and Elsa. Considering both of these ink pairings are home to some of thegame’s strongest archetypes, we could be seeing a bit more spice in these than we’re normally used to.

Shimmering Skies Accessories

As with Ursula’s Return, this set’s not taking from its own cards for its accessories. Instead, cards from as far back as The First Chapter will be found on its sleeves and playmats:

The most interesting part of the accessories lineup are the two portfolio folders. The first is a lineup of art from The First Chapter’s starter decks, featuring Aladdin, Maleficent, Simba, Moana, Mickey Mouse, and Cruella De Vil. There’s a definite nostalgic feel to the accessories this time, with art focused on the first two sets.

Lorcana Cover

The second simply takes the Lorcana card back design and puts it on the folder. It looks great, and I’m shocked Ravensburger hasn’t done that already.

A Tie-In With Disney Villainous

One more card from Shimmering Skies was revealed, and it’s my personal favourite Disney villain: Prince John, Gold Lover. It looks an absolute fiend for item decks, letting you recur items from your discard pile for free.

However, the version of Gold Lover shown off won’t be found in regular Lorcana packs. Instead, it’s exclusive to labelled boxes ofDisney Villainous: Introduction To Evil. This is a starter set of Ravensburger’s other big Disney game, featuring four characters and a streamlined learning process to help you get into the game quicker.

The art on this version even matches the style of Villainous, which is slightly more rendered than Lorcana’s modern storybook vibes. You’ll still be able to find Gold Lover in packs of Shimmering Skies, but it’ll include regular art and lack the confetti foiling treatment found on promos like it.

Lorcana’s Shimmering Skies launches on August 9 for local game stores, ahead of its full retail launch on August 23.
