Summary

The Prince of Persia franchisehas experienced a sort of renaissance in 2024. First, there was the release ofPrince of Persia: The Lost Crownin January, which was immediately well-received. Then, a few months later,The Rogue Prince of Persiaentered early access. That game, in particular,is a roguelite tale that is not connected to any of the other games in the series.

But for as good as the year has been for the Ubisoft franchise, things have not nearly been as kind to the remake of The Sands of Time. Still,a recent update via Ubisoft Torontomay signal positive things to come for the beleaguered project. On Monday, the Toronto-based studio announced on Twitter that it joined the team over at Ubisoft Montreal in helping develop The Sands of Time remake.

In particular, the studio shared that it couldn’t wait to share its “creativity, expertise and updated tech to refresh this beloved classic.” Check it out:

Originally announced all the way back in 2020, the project was set to be a total remakeof the original Sands of Time game that was released in the early 2000s. The announcement, which had leaked ahead of it becoming official, was immediately panned by fans for its lackluster graphics, something that Ubisoft tried to immediately downplay.

Things quickly unraveled from there. Originally, the game was set for release in January 2021, and preorders had opened, with a litany of bonuses revealed. Then, the remake was delayed to March 2021, with the developers citing a need for extra time.

And just several weeks after that, the game had been delayed indefinitely, though Ubisofteventually shared that it had a target release timeframe for 2022. An update from October 2021ensured fans that the game was still being developed, though no other details were provided.

As if this story didn’t already have enough twists,it was then announced that Ubisoft Montreal would be taking over developmentof the remake. Previously, Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai were co-developing the project, though they were removed altogether. With preorders already canceled,Montreal began remaking the remake in mid 2023, and before the end of the year, Ubisoft sharedthat the team had hit an internal milestone.

Ubisoft Toronto has had its hands in several big-time projects, including the upcomingStar Wars Outlaws. It’s unclear exactly what its role will be, or if there will be any new information to share.Monday’s press release did notethat “Ubisoft Montreal continues to make excellent progress on the remake.” So, perhaps it won’t be long before gamers are able to re-preorder the remake of a remake.
