Summary
There are now more than 1,000Pokemonfor The Pokemon Company to choose from whenever it decides which ones it’s going to feature in its next merch lines. Whether there are 1,000 or 10,000 Pokemon, the likes of Pikachu and the Kanto starters will never be overlooked. However, as new stars such as Scorbunny and Wooloo are given their share of the spotlight, older favorites have to make room. That’s the only explanation I can come up with for Gengar still not having its ownFunko Pop.
Outside of the core four I already mentioned, there’s a strong case to be made that Gengar is the most popular Pokemon of all. It seems the wait for the well-loved Ghost-type to get its own Funko Pop might finally be over too. According to reliable leakerFunko Pop News, a Gengar figure is coming. The only downside to that for now is,unlike the Arceus and Dialga Pops shown off last week, there are no images of Gengar’s first Funko Pop, nor is there any indication as to when we’ll get a first official look.
Gengar isn’t usually overlooked when it comes to Pokemon merch. It was one of the first Pokemon to get a Squishmallow, and my own wardrobe serves as proof that there’s no shortage of Gengar t-shirts on the market. You can also graba pair of officially licensed Gengar hi-top sneakers from Hot Topic, released just a week ago and available for what I think is a very reasonable $45.
A Gengar Funko Pop Is Coming
As for what Gengar’s Funko Pop might look like, that could be why it has taken so long for this much-requested dream to become a reality. On the one hand, Gengar’s short and round stature lends itself to Funko Pop status. There’s not much that will need to be done to Gengar’s general shape to make it appear Funko Pop-like. It’s Gengar’s features that are the problem. Giving Gengar little black eyes doesn’t seem like it would work. Funko Pops also tend to not have mouths, although other designs would suggest Pokemon figures are typically the exception to that rule.
The Pokemon Funko Pop wheel was turning pretty quickly at the start of 2024 and has started back up again after a brief break. Not only via the reveal that Dialga and Arceus are getting Comic-Con exclusive figures, but alsovia a Pearlescent Pichu Popavailable exclusively through the Pokemon Center. Pokemon confirmedthere will be six pearlescent Pokemon Popsreleased through 2024 and Pichu is the second of them.
