Summary

A little more than a year on from its launch, you’d be forgiven for thinkingPlayStationhad already thrown in the towel on the PS VR2. Very little has been released for its next-gen headset, and since it isn’t backwards compatible with PS VR games, its library remains extremely limited. That changes on August 7 as PlayStation has confirmed that’s the date you’ll be able to hook your PS VR2 up to aPCand play games onSteam. You’re going to need to buy an adapter if you want to do that, though.

PlayStation confirmed earlier this year thatit was hoping to roll out PC compatibility for the headsetbefore the end of 2024, and it has achieved that goal with a lot of time to spare.Revealed via the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation VR2 PC adapter will go on sale through PlayStation and other select retailers on August 7. The adapter will cost $59.99 and you will also need a DisplayPort cable that is compatible with DisplayPort 1.4 to hook the headset up to your PC.

Having to pay even more to make the PS VR2 something you want to use regularly might further turn people off. The headset costs $550 (althoughit’s currently $100 in the Days of Play sale), so the addition of a $60 cable bumps it up to more than $600. On the bright side, until now you have needed aPS5to use the headset. Now if you have a PC with good enough specs - you may check out the required specs in the blog post - you will no longer need a console to use the PS VR2.

The pros and cons keep on coming. The biggest pro of all is from August 7, you will no longer be restricted to PlayStation’s limited PS VR2 library. Fallout 4 VR,Half-Life: Alyx, and every other VR game you can buy on Steam will be playable. However, some of the features that make the PS VR2 so good won’t be compatible with Steam. Eye tracking, for example, will remain a PS5-exclusive feature. The same applies to the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback introduced via the DualSense that were brought over to the PS VR2’s controllers.

It remains unclear if this is the shot in the arm the PS VR2 needs to make it worth PlayStation’s while. For those who need an excuse to dust off their headset, or buy one, before August 7, PlayStation revealedfive PS VR2 games will be free to play through PS Plus Premiumstarting later this month. It also showed off two new PS VR2 games during last week’s State of Play just to confirm to those who own them that there are still new games coming.
