Summary
Xbox’smultiplatform plans seem to be going quite well, asPlayStationhas revealed that former Xbox exclusiveSea of Thieveswas the best-selling title on PS5 last month.
We’re at an interesting point in the games industry regarding exclusivity, as Xbox continues to put outmore of its former exclusives on rival platforms. Even PlayStation has been dabbling, gradually releasing its vast first-party library on PCand evenannouncing a new Lego Horizon gamethat will launch on the Nintendo Switch alongside PS5. For the most part, it’s a plan that’s been working well for all parties involved, especially Xbox, which has recently reaped the benefits of bringing Sea of Thieves to PlayStation.

Revealed earlier today, the best-selling games on PS5 for May were listed on thePlayStation Blog, and the usual suspects are all there. Helldivers 2, Assassin’s Creed, and GTA are all where you’d expect them to be, but it’s Sea of Thieves that has managed to top last month’s board, beating the likes of Madden and fellow Xbox title Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. That’s no small feat.
Sea Of Thieves Is Doing Very Well On PlayStation
Of course, we don’t have any firm numbers, so we don’t know exactly how impressive this feat is, but topping something like Call of Duty signals it’s doing well at the very least. It’s also worth noting that it’s been a pretty slow year for PlayStation so far, with Stellar Blade and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth probably the biggest exclusives so far, and we know the latter rather infamously sold quite poorly.
Either way, it’s a roaring success for Xbox, and could pave the way for more exclusives on PlayStation in the future. Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, and Pentiment all made the jump to PS5 recently, but it was Sea of Thieves thatXbox picked out as a “key test"that would decide whether releasing its exclusives on other platforms is a worthwhile endeavor. It’s safe to say that the test went well.
