Video game subscription services are fantastic for those of us who are fed up with spending $70 on new games, not to mention the opportunity they provide to catch up on your backlog without having to buy even more games. The downside is relying on a service to have the games you want to play, and even worse, asPlayStation Plushas demonstrated this week, games leaving the service with little warning. PlayStation quietly confirmed 25 games will be leaving its PS Plus library next month, and a significant chunk of them are bigFinal Fantasytitles.
PlayStation quietly updated PS Plus’s Last Chance To Play page (thanks,Push Square), and leading the charge of games leaving its Extra and Premium tiers on May 21 isFinal Fantasy 7. That’s just the original version of the game, notFinal Fantasy 7 Remakewhich will still be available through PS Plus for the foreseeable future. PlayStation appears to be having something of a Final Fantasy clearout as six other games from the series, including 8, 9, and both parts of 10, will also be leaving on the same day.
Almost certainly not an indicator thatSquare Enixand PlayStation’s Final Fantasy agreement has fallen on hard times, and more a sign that the timeframe the two parties gave for the games to be on PS Plus is about to expire. Since they were likely all added at the same time, that means they’re all leaving at the same time. For the optimists among you, it could also be a sign that the long-awaited Final Fantasy 9 remake is real and some concrete news will be coming soon.
While the Final Fantasy games leaving the service are the ones stealing all the headlines, they’re far from the only titles departing PS Plus next month. Also joining them are The Artful Escape, My Friend Pedro, Jotun, and Monster Jam Steel Titans 2. The full list of games leaving the service can be found below. Note that even if you have these games downloaded, unless you paid for them, they will become unplayable once they leave PS Plus. If you want to keep playing after May 21, you’ll need to buy them.
Games Leaving PS Plus On May 21
The leaving PS Plus page was likely updated at the same time as PlayStation added a handful of new games to its Extra and Premium tiers. Although 25 games leaving on May 21 will be a bitter pill to swallow, especially for anyone working their way through the Final Fantasy series, yesterday was one of the biggest days for the service so far.Dave The Diverwas added to its library the same day it was released onPS5, and 13 other games joined it. There’s also stillTales Of Kenzera: Zauto come on April 23.
