Although I’d still argue that Super Mario RPG goes further with its risque jokes and themes than the rest of the series, the Paper Mario games are no slouch when it comes to mature moments. Without a doubt, the most infamous scene in The Thousand-Year Door that still shocks me that it managed to get through the ratings board isthe interaction with Hooktail during her boss fight.
Hooktail Still Offers To Let You Smell Her Feet In Paper Mario’s Remake
For those who haven’t played the original game, one of the earliest bosses in The Thousand-Year Door is Hooktail, a dragon who Mario must defeat in order to get the Diamond Star. During the battle, Hooktail will try and bargain with the player, falsely offering them 1,000 coins, a special badge, and, best of all, a chance to sniff her feet.
That’s right, for some strange reason, the most popular Paper Mario game has a scene where one of the characters is trying to get Mario to “take a whiff” of her “world-renowned feet”. Of course, you don’t actually get todothat, as it’s just a trick to get Mario close enough to attack him, but it’s a memorably weird moment nonetheless.

It’s such a strange sequence in the original game that many fans wondered if it would be included in the remake. Well,as TheGamer’s preview of The Thousand-Year Door on Switch confirmed, Hooktail does indeed still ask if Mario wants to sniff her feet, this time with the addendum that it’s a “one-time offer”.
Not only that, but it seems that the remake puts a little more focus on Hooktail’s obsession with feet. In the original release, the battle’s intro has Hooktail saying she’s going to eat Mario after sauteeing him,but now she says she’s going to eat him after “gnawing on the bottoms of your feet”. Whatever you’re into, I guess.
