The cover art forMarvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classicsseems to be referencing one of the series' most iconic ships -Spider-Manand Morrigan.

Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct was absolutely full of big announcements, from Zelda finally getting her own standalone gametoMetroid Prime 4 re-emerging after years of silence, but there was one that came as a particular surprise - theclassic Marvel vs. Capcom games are finally returning in one massive collection.

Marvel vs. Capcom has basically been silent since the controversial release of Infinite, so seeing all of the classic games (that have been basically impossible to get a hold of for the last decade) return in one collection was big news for the community. Alongside the reveal trailer,a piece of key art was also revealed for the Marvel vs. Capcom re-release, one which seems to nod towards a well-known ship.

Spider-Man And Morrigan Are Back At It Again In Marvel Vs. Capcom

Beyond being an excellent piece of key art that shows Cyclops and Ryu doing their iconic hand-shake, eagle-eyed fans noticed that there an iconic pairing has once again been put next to one another - Spider-Man and Morrigan. Despite Spidey canonically being in a committed relationship with MJ in the MvC series, fans have long poked fun at how close he seems to be to Morrigan.

As highlighted by Twitter user juneybee03, this is an in-joke that has been going in Marvel vs. Capcom for some time, with one piece of concept art even showing Spidey and Morrigan taking an undeniably cute photo together. Another screenshot shows a piece of pre-battle dialogue between the pair that has Peter saying, “Hope M.J. doesn’t mind if I’m late tonight!”.

While that dialogue clearly isn’t supposed to be implying what everyone thinks it is,it’s another reason why some fans have shipped the pair since the early days of Marvel vs. Capcom, something that the collection appears to be poking fun at. While Spidey and Morrigan aren’t doing anything particularly saucy on the cover art, itisfunny and surely purposeful to have them paired up once more.

Here’s hoping that M.J. isn’t too bothered if Spider-Man comes home late once more.
