Two years ago,Sega announced that it was bringing back a bunch of classic gameslikeCrazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, andStreets of Rage, with plans to not only remake the originals but develop entirely new entries in their respective series.
Sega shared a trailer at The Game Awards 2023featuring brief snippets of these games, giving us our first look at the new Jet Set Radio. Not much has been said since, but gameplay screenshots and a video leaked yesterday alongside claims from Midori and Neptune that what we saw was the remake.
Midori came under fire earlier this month after it was discovered that they were a white man pretending to be a Japanese woman. They have since deleted their Twitter account.
“It is a full remake of the Dreamcast game and is not related to the [free to play] reboot,” writes Twitter user @MSKAZZY69. “These are screenshots from a development version of the game.
“The JSR Remake is an open world remake with new additions that are also similar to the reboot. This remake is [being developed] in UE5. This is why the screenshots look much different from the original game. The reboot expands on this remake.”
The leaked screenshots and video show off the open world map (which features a tab called ‘TeamUp’), protagonist Beat grinding on the side of a road and along billboards, some of the old graffiti designs, the minimap, and an early in-development version of the HUD.
Not Everyone Is Convinced These Screenshots Are From The Remake
While it’s claimed that this footage is taken from the Jet Set Radio remake, not everyone is convinced. It’s reportedly expanding on the 2000 cult classic by swapping the linear levels for an open world, but strangely none of the locations are from the original.
Some believe that it might be a similar situation to Jet Set Radio Future in that it’s more of a reimagining than a remake, evident by the new map and mechanics. But others are convinced that this is the free-to-play reboot.
It’s worth noting that Midori’s claims of it being the remake, not the reboot, were corroborated by leaker Komajiro who also shared alleged design documents from the game, delving deeper into its world setting and various factions.
Whatever the case, this is our best look at the new Jet Set Radio so far.
