Tempering is a mechanic added in Season 4 ofDiablo 4, allowing you to take your equipment to new levels. Tempering essentially lets you add more stats to an item, which can lead to extremely potent results.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind when Tempering your gear. Recklessly Tempering your equipment can leave you with stats that don’t help your build, with no way to return your item to its original state. Below, we’ll go over everything you need to know about Tempering your gear, including how to get and use Tempering Manuals.

What Is Tempering?

Tempering is the process ofadding specific statsto a piece of gear by usingTempering Manuals. Each Tempering Manual has specific stats that it can grant to the item, and they are divided intosix different categories, with some categories of Manual only being able to be applied to certain types of gear.

Tempering Manuals are stored in your Codex of Power when you collect them.

To Temper your gear, simply head to anyBlacksmithand select theTempering option. Here, you canchoose any piece of equipment, which will then show youwhich Tempering Recipes are compatible.Select the recipe, thenpay some materials, and a random affix will be added to your gear.

First, however, you’ll need to get your hands on some Tempering Manuals.Tempering Manualscome withthree to six different statsthat they can grant the piece of equipment. These stats are shown in ranges, so theexact valuethat is applied to the piece of equipment israndom within that range.

Manuals also come inthree rarities(Magic, Rare, and Legendary) with increasingly powerful stats. When you get a Tempering Manual of the same name but in a higher rarity, the lower-rarity version becomes obsolete.

There are some rules to keep in mind when Tempering your gear. Most importantly, you can only Temper most items with one additional stat, butAncestral items can be Tempered with two stats. Additionally, you can’t Temper Uniques at all.

When Tempering Ancestral items, you can’t use the same Manual twiceon the same item.

The most important thing to keep in mind when Tempering your gear is that there is amaximum number of times you’re able to reroll a Tempered affix. For most items, the limit is fiveTempering rerolls.

This means that after you’ve rerolled the same item five times, you will bestuck with whatever stat you rolled last. You’ll want to be very careful about Tempering your gear and fishing for higher stats, as you may end up with stats you don’t want.

Tempered stats willincrease when Masterworking an item.

How To Get Tempering Manuals

Tempering Manuals drop fromany enemy in any World Tier. This means you will start collecting Tempering Manuals as soon as you start killing enemies. Of course, higher rarities of Tempering Manuals are harder to find.

You aremore likely to get Tempering Manuals for your current class. For example, Sorcerers are more likely to find Tempering Manuals like Conjuration Efficiency, whereas Barbarians are more likely to find Manuals like Berserking Finesse.

Also, once you obtain a Manual, it is essentiallyremoved from the loot table. Thisprevents you from getting duplicate Tempering Manuals.

Once you obtain a Tempering Manual, you canuse it an unlimited number of times.
