Though there’s technically no right or wrong way to proceed throughAnimal Well, acombat-free Metroidvaniawith a super creepy ambiance, one of the most critical upgrades you’ll find for your little blob is the Disc. Except, when you find it, its keeper doesn’t exactly want to give it up.
To get the Disc in Animal Well, you’ll need to venture through the darkness nearby and locate a Mock Disc to swap out in an Indiana Jones-style switcheroo. Tide the Ghost Dog with the weight of the Mock Disc and take the actual Disc upgrade for yourself in Animal Well.

This guide contains some spoilers for the progression of Animal Well. It’s best to go in as unaware of the game as you’re able, so use this guide with caution!
Find The Mock Disc To Stop The Ghost Dog’s Attack
Depending on which way you proceed throughthe earliest parts of Animal Well, the Disc may be the first upgrade you find.
It’s locatedjust above the Egg Room, the space that displays all the secret eggs you’ve found so far with the large peacock keeping watch.Consult your map often!

Beware, though -taking the Disc from the statue’s mouth unleashes the Ghost Dog, which will continuously and unrelentinglyhunt you down unless something is in the statue’s mouth. When you first arrive, the only thing you’ll have is the actual Frisbee itself, so to take it, you’ll need to find something with which to swap it out.
Where To Get The Mock Disc
From the statue,go left into the next room, where you’ll see a ladder on the left side behind a locked pillar. Around this room, there arethree switchesyou’ll need to hit to unlock the path. Thankfully, you can hit them in a pretty fluid motion.
Use the crank on the platform in the center of the room toraise the block all the way to the ceiling. Immediately, jump beneath where the block would land and jump through the opening to the left. Jump to hit that switch, and then the other just above it as well.

No shame if it takes a few tries to get the timing down - the switches stay hit, so you’re not in a rush.
Before it falls too far,use the block to jump to the third and highest platform, where you’ll hit the final switch and open the blocked path below. Jump down andclimb the ladderto proceed.

In the room above, you’ll find atelephone, so save your game to respawn here, should anything happen (and for a tactical shortcut in a little bit!). There’s also a fruit nearby, so grab an extra heart if you need. From here, jump up the platforms that the dog statue is looking at, andride the platform at the top of the roomall the way to the ledge on the left, then head that way.
Going to the right, you’ll see the chest with the Mock Disc past the door that’s currently blocked, but you don’t currently have a way to get there. Keep this space in mind for later, though.

In here, you’ll find ablue dogwho seems more than ready to eat you.Dogs will chase and bite you, and they can even jump tograb you out of the airif you’re near enough, so be careful as youdrop and head to the rightinto a passageway too narrow for the blue dog to follow, then follow the bottom path to the next room.
It’s pretty dark up ahead, sostock up on Firecrackers- there are a few lying around here if you haven’t come prepared.Use Firecrackers to light dark spaces, which will help younavigate through this room toward the bottom, being careful of the spikes should you head toward the right instead of the left.

In the dark again,use a Firecracker to light this small space(grabbing another from the ground before you go), and make your way over the ledge to the right. In the next room, there’s aspirit that spawns from an unlit candle, so use your Firecracker to safely navigate the room, as well as light it up. Get to thebottom of the room, then go all the way to the left.
Youreallyneed Firecrackers in this next room - it’s way too dark! Toss a Firecracker to reveal ablock and leverin the room. Using the light of the Firecracker,jump from the block to the ledge, then the ledge to the crank.

Crank the block all the way to the ceiling, then drop down andrun left past where the block wasbefore it comes back down.
You come out into anotherroom with a blue dogwho very much knows you’re here, and aladder at the top right. Here, you’ll need tocarefully avoid the dogon your way to the ladder, thenclimb the ladder. In the space above, there are severalplatforms you can turn on and off, which you’ll need to use toreach the top right cornerof this room.

Carefully jump across the platforms, butdon’t hit the first switch in this room. This is a red herring that will immediately drop you back into the room with the dog.
From the platform with the false switch, jump to the right and flip the switch here, which creates a platform for you to drop onto just below. Use this and the platform to your right tojump to the switch at the top right. The wall here is transparent, so head on through (grabbing a fruit on the way, if the dog got you).
Follow this dark, narrow path all the way to the right, grabbing another fruit if needed. Run along this path through two screens, which leads you over the room with the telephone and into the top left corner of theroom with the Mock Disc. Grab it from the chest, then head to theroom to your right.
Go Back To The Statue And Swap Out The Mock Disc
Here, you’ll find abrown wiener dog, and unlike its counterparts, this dogcan follow you into the tunnelsthat allowed you to lose the blue dog and flee to safety. You’ll need tobe quick in navigating the tunnels beneath the room, because the dog can and will catch up if you’re not quick enough.
On the bright side, sincethe Mock Disc registers in your inventory when you get it, if you’re killed by this dog after saving at the telephone you crawled over to get to the room with the chest, you’ll respawn at the telephone out there for an easy route back. Alternatively, you may keep avoiding dogs all the way back to the main ladder, and climb back down to the telephone room.
From the telephone, goback down the ladderto the left and out through the door you unlocked with the switches, which leads youback to the room with the Frisbee.
to get the Disc from the Ghost Dog, you’ll need toquickly swap the Mock Disc for the Disc. Doing so prevents the Ghost Dog from spawning and rewards you with the Disc in your inventory, allowing you to take it elsewhere and use the Disc to solve puzzles in Animal Well!
If you’d like to unlock the path for later (and you should - we think shortcuts are critical), make your way back to the room where you got the Mock Disc once you have the Frisbee, andtoss the disc through the narrow opening at the yellow buttontoward the bottom right of the screen. This opens the locked door and creates a path back to that telephone above the room with the dog statue.
