Pokemon Scarlet & Violethas just released its latest raid: Primarina. This gorgeous mermaid seal from the Alola region boasts a monstrous special attack that’s well-known for ripping through the Sun and Moon games and makes a great catch for players, assuming they can beat it.
Fortunately — or unfortunately depending on your view — the raid boss eschews using its naturally high stats to sweep through raid parties in favor of using the very annoying strategy of Sing and Encore, something that’s very hard to deal with in raids. It’s not an impossible hurdle, however, and a well-prepared trainer can navigate Primarina’s traps and come out on top.

Primarina’s moveset is very gimmicky. It immediately hits you with Sing to put your Pokemon to sleep, and it has Encore to lock you into one move for three whole turns.
On top of being a very tricky build,it’s packing very strong special moves like Surf, Sparkling Aria, Moonblast, and Psychicto hit you while you’re vulnerable.
If you’re on a team,set-up Pokemon with Light Screen and Electric Terrain will be very usefulto reduce damage and prevent sleep.
you may also use the Cheer function to heal Sleep, but keep in mind each player can only use it three times. If you’re playing solo or random online raids, you’ll need to be more careful.
The Best Pokemon To Solo Primarina
Gholdengo is amazing at soloing Primarina if you don’t want to go through the hassle of online raids. Its ability Good As Gold makes it immune to Encore and Sing, it can hit hard with STAB Flash Cannon, and being a Special Attacker isn’t a hindrance, because Primarina doesn’t raise its stats.
On top of that, its Steel typing meansPrimarina won’t use Psychic or Moonblast,so you don’t have to worry about those stat drops.
Nasty Plot, Flash Cannon, Light Screen
Steel
As soon as the raid starts, open with Light Screen, then usethree Nasty Plotsto max out your Special Attack. From here, useFlash CannonuntilPrimarinaresets its own stats.
Be careful here, as this meansthenext turn it’s going to reset your stats, and more importantly, disable your Good As Gold.
Primarina willhit you with either Sing or Encorehere.
If it uses Sing, use a healing cheer to heal the sleep, then set upLight Screenand set up again.Terastalizewhen you can, and you’re free tospam Flash Cannonuntil Primarina faints.
If ituses Encore, you have a couple of optionsbased on the last move you used.
If it wasFlash Cannon, just keepspamming it until Encore wears offto fill up your Tera Orb.
You can check how many uses of Encore you have left on the Status screen.
If it wasLight Screen, use yourAttack and Defense cheersto waste the Encore while boosting your stats.
If it wasNasty Plot, continue setting up and thenuse a Defense cheeron the last turn.
Whatever happens, once you’re through that, Primarina won’t turn off your ability again, andyou’re free to set up and spam Flash Cannon.
In a solo raid, you can faint once and still have enough time to defeat Primarina once you return.
You don’t need to worry about Light Screen once you’re at max Special Attack and Terastalized, you’ll be doing enough damage to heal everything back with the Shell Bell.
Make sure you’vemaxed out your Gholdengho’s IVsto give you the edge, anduse a PP Up on Flash Cannon. Other than that this strategy is pretty reliable for soloing Primarina if you want to grind Tera Shards and Herba Mystica after catching it.
