As ifThat’s Not My Neighborwasn’t already difficult enough, Nightmare Mode adds a whole new level of difficulty to the game. While the basic premise of That’s Not My Neighbor’s Nightmare Mode is the same as the Arcade mode, the key differences lie in how difficult it is to spot impostors and how you are punished for failure.
Nightmare Mode doesn’t take place in a normal office building. Instead, you are living inside the Doorman’s Nightmare and must survive the Nightmare by weeding out and eradicating any Doppelgangers that come to your window. But be careful! Even the most convincing impostors have tells.

How To Play That’s Not My Neighbor’s Nightmare Mode
While Nightmare Mode serves as aharder version of the base game, the good news is that thegeneral layout of tasks is the same. In Nightmare Mode, you will haveall of the same toolsat your disposal in the Nightmare Office and you willuse them the same way.
Tofamiliarize yourselfwith the basic layout and function of all of your office tools, head to theBeginner’s Guidefor a morein-depth run downof how everything works.

Just like in the regular office, you have aphone, three file folders, aDaily Visitor List, theViewing Window,Entry Request Forms,I.D.s, and aChecklist. Methodically use each of these diagnostic tools todetermine which Nightmare Neighbors are the real deal, and which ones are Doppelgangers trying to eat you.
Differences From Arcade Mode
While the general premise of Nightmare Mode is the same as Arcade Mode, there are afew key differencesto note.
The Nightmare Office
The first, and most noticeable difference you will encounter, is thenew office. In Nightmare Mode, you won’t be nearly as safe behind the window as you were in Arcade Mode, and theappearance of your officewill reflect thesenew dangers.
The Nightmare Office iscovered in goreand goo and has a few ‘sentient’ elements (like thefour eye-ball rivetsthat probably aren’t structurally sound) to it that add to the macabre ambiance of your space.

Forplayers with Trypophobia, make sure you’vetoggled the Trypophobia featurein the settings of the main menu. The Nightmare Office has a set of Trypophobia-triggering holes at thebottom rightof the screen. Toggling the Trypophobia filter willcover these holes with goreso that they aren’t as obvious.
Insta-Death
The next major difference between Nightmare Mode and Arcade Mode is theimplementation of Insta-Deaths.
In theregularmode, youwouldn’t knowif you let a Doppelganger in until theend of the round. However, in Nightmare Mode, Doppelgangers willmurder you instantlyupon being let into the building.

You’ll know right away when you’ve made a mistake. Similarly, killing a Neighborwill result in a haunting, and you’ll get aspooky jump-scareon your screen.
verify tobe as thorough as possiblewhen you are vetting visitors. If you’re wrong, you won’t get to play any more of the round.

Evil Visitors And The Killer Clown’s Card Game
Similar to how Arcade Mode hadstrange non-Neighborvisitors who would come to your window, Nightmare Mode has its ownequivalents of those Neighborsas well.
However, you shouldbe more waryof the new visitors in Nightmare Mode, as each one ismore lethal than the last.

Evil Chester, is one of the nicer new characters, and hewon’t kill youif you lose his quiz, unlike the Killer Clown, who will kill you for losing.
There are a bunch of new Doppelgangers to meet, so keep trying Nightmare Mode until youmeet them all. Some havespecial encounters, like the Mask Ghost whoappears three times.

The biggest visitor change is theKiller Clown. In Arcade Mode, the Killer Clown shows up, drops a pamphlet off, and leaves, but in Nightmare Mode, heoffers you a game of cards.
Winningthe Killer Clowns game or cardsirritates him, butkeeps you safewhilelosingresults inlosing the whole round… and your head.

Nightmare Neighbors
The Neighbors in Nightmare Mode are altogethermuch differentfrom those in Arcade Mode. The new Neighbors are allspookyand evena little gory. However, despite their disturbing appearances, these Neighbors arestill friendlyand you still need toprotect themfrom alien Doppelganger invaders.
Nightmare Neighbors havemore complex appearancesthan regular Neighbors and catching cosmetic inconsistencies ismuch harderthan in Arcade mode. Some Nightmare Neighbors like Chaugnar, have Doppelgangers whose appearance isonly off by a barely-visible horn tiporincorrect tattoo.
Nightmare Neighborscorrespond with regular Neighbors, but their apartments and roommates won’t always match up with their human counterparts.
Francis, for example, lives alonein Arcade Mode, but his Nightmare version, Sothoth, lives with his daughter.
No Ranking
Lastly, the final biggest difference is the fact that Nightmare modedoes not affect your game rankings. Youwon’t get a letter rankingat the end of your Nightmare. Instead, this game mode functions on apass-fail system.
Dying, losing the quiz, losing the cardgame, or killing a Neighborwill result in a loss at the end of the Nightmare.
Winning the round means youbeat the Nightmaresuccessfully. To do this, let all Neighbors in, and cleanse all Doppelgangers.
The fact that Nightmare Mode rounds don’t affect your ranking is agood thing. With how difficult Nightmare Mode can get, it’s better not to risk throwing off your letter ranking scoreboard withfrequent failures. It also means you canexperiment as much as you wantin Nightmare Mode without ranking repercussions.
However, because youdon’t receive a letter rankingat the end of Nightmare Mode, youwon’t be able to earn achievementslikeWorse Than HenryorBetter Than Henrywhile completing a Nightmare Mode run.
Nightmare Mode Achievements
Because Nightmare Mode brings with it awhole new set of challenges, so, too, does it bring with it anew set of achievements. There areeight Nightmare Mode achievementsto collect in total, and you can find them onpage two of your achievements screenin the Record menu.
you’re able to stillearn a few regular achievementswhile playing Nightmare Mode, but youcannotearn any Nightmare Mode achievements in the game’s Arcade Mode. The onlyexception is the Collector achievement, which is earned by collecting all achievements in the game.
