The Witcher 3may be one of the most popular video games ever created, but it’s not perfect. If you’ve ever wished your food buffs lasted just a bit longer, or you could carry just a few more items, or that Geralt’s beard and hair trimming was just a bit more immersive, then mods are your answer.

By modding the game, you can make tons of small or large changes to improve your overall experience. Luckily, CD Projekt RED has added Steam Workshop support to the Witcher 3, meaning modding is now easier than ever. If you’re wondering how to mod your game on PC, you’ve come to the right place.

How To Install Mods From Nexus Mods

Nexus Mods has a wealth of content created by the community over the years, making it a great place to find a variety of mods. Installing mods from Nexus works a little differently than Steam Workshop, but we’re here to help.

To start, decide whether you want to install your modsmanuallyor through theVortex Mod Manager. Manually installing mods gives you more control and is good if you only want a few quality-of-life mods, while the Mod Manager is better if you’re dealing withlarge mod packsor want to simplify the entire process. We’ll go over both methods below.

Manually Installing Mods

Once you’ve found the mod you want, head to the files tab on its page on Nexus Mods. Then, click themanual downloadbutton. This will get you the zipped mod file. Now, navigate to the game’s installation folder.

If you have the game throughSteam, the install folder is located at SteamLibrary -> steamapps -> common -> The Witcher 3

In The Witcher 3 folder, create a folder called “mods"if you don’t already have one. Now,move the zipped mod folder hereandextract it. Once the mod is extracted, you candelete the zipped folder.

And that’s all there is to it! Manually installing mods is best when you’re only using a few small mods that tweak small things. For larger mods like graphic overhauls, you should consider using the Vortex Mod Manager.

When downloading mods through Nexus, make sure they arecompatible with the current version of the game.

Installing Mods With Vortex Mod Manager

With the Vortex Mod Manager, you can install mods without having to navigate through the game’s files.

To get started, open up Vortex andadd The Witcher 3 as one of your “managed” games. Then, open up Nexus and find the mod you want. When downloading, choose"Mod Manager Download”.

This will prompt your browser toautomatically open Vortexand download the mod there. If this doesn’t happen, you can also manually download the mod and add it to Vortex.

Now, in Vortex, you should see your list of mods, and whether they areenabled or not. If your mod is enabled, you’re good to go!

If your mods are enabled but not working in game, you may have tochange the staging folder. This happens if you have Vortex installed on adifferent drive than your game.

To change the staging folder, go to thesettings tab in Vortexand selectMods. Here, click “suggest” to have the staging folder moved to somewhere on the same drive as the game. After that, you’ll need tore-deploy your mods into the staging folderto get them to work.
