Diablo 4has replaced its upgrading system with Masterworking, a new item upgrading mechanic that allows you to greatly improve the stats on your items. Through the use of Masterwork materials found in endgame content, you can greatly increase the effectiveness of every Legendary and Unique item in the game.
Creating strong items will require you to unlock the Masterworking system first, which is quite easy to do. This guide will explain how Masterworking works, how to unlock it, and where you’re able to find every Masterwork material tied to this new upgrade system. Jump into The Pit and speak to any Blacksmith to get started.
What Is Masterworking?
Masterworking is a mechanic introduced in Season 4 that replaces Diablo 4’s previous crafting system.Every Legendary and Unique item in Diablo 4 can be Masterworked, improving every affix on the item.Unlike the previous crafting system, item Masterworking has 12 upgrade tiers, each requiring specific Masterwork materials from The Pit endgame activity.
Items that you Masterwork will gain stronger affix values in small increments, usually 5% per upgrade. At max rank, an item will be 45% stronger than a non-Masterworked item. Additionally, every four upgrades will enhance a random affix by 25%,including Tempered affixes. Needless to say, Masterworking your items is key to creating the strongest builds in Diablo 4.
How To Masterwork Your Items
You unlock the ability to Masterwork items uponcompleting your first Pit run.Once you complete the activity,speak with the Blacksmith in Kyovashad to unlock the Masterwork tab. You can use the Masterwork materials earned in The Pit to enhance your items. Each upgrade costs a hefty sum of upgrade materials and Gold, so Masterworking an entire set of gear can take hours of grinding.
You can Masterwork your items at any Blacksmith, not just the one in Kyovashad.
Masterworking an item will slightly increase its affix values by 5%, which can go past the affix’s normal stat range. This happens for the first three upgrades on the item.For every fourth upgrade you perform, a random affix will be enhanced by 25%.The affix the game picks is completely random, and it can enhance Tempered affixes if any are present on the item. The same affix can also be upgraded multiple times this way.
Every item can be Masterworked 12 times.This applies to both Legendary and Unique items. Unlike Tempering, you can actually reset your Masterwork progress by clicking the reset button in the Masterwork menu. Your resources willnotbe refunded, but this lets you reforge the item in hopes of hitting a certain affix upgrade. There’s no limit to how many times you may reset an item’s Masterwork.
