If you’ve played an open-world crafting game before, you’re probably already aware of the importance of wood. It’s the resource that gets you started with everything, and while it might not be as important inPax Dei, it will still be something you’ll consistently need to farm.
This game has two major types of wood: Sapwood and Heartwood. While you need Sapwood toget started in it, you won’t be getting any Heartwood for quite a while. Here are the best ways to stack up on both of these as quickly as possible.

Pax Dei is currently in Early Access, and everything mentioned in this article is subject to change.
Where To Get Sapwood
Once you open Pax Dei and land in the world after creating your character and choosing your spawn location, one of thefirst things that the game asks you to do is collect some Sapwood. However, at this point in time, you don’t have anything to harvest trees, so you just have to shift your gaze to the ground.
Every area where new players can spawn is marked within a red boundary on the map, andyou can find tree branches scattered everywhere in these areas. you’re able to get Sapwood by interacting with them. However, the better way to acquire Sapwood is by creating the Gneiss Stone Axe in the crafting menu.

This axe only takes two Sapwood and one Gneiss to craft, but it’s also the most basic equipment in the game. You’ll only be able to harvest small trees with it. Getting Sapwood becomes a lot easier as you craft high-tier axes through the Weaponsmith Workbench, though you need rare resources likeIron and Wrought Iron Ingotsfor it.
Where To Get Heartwood
Much like Sapwood, you’ll be able to acquire Heartwood by chopping up trees. However, the earliest you can get this type of wood isafter you acquire the Iron Chopping Axe or Brutal Battleaxe. Once you’ve done that, you need to look for trees that are significantly darker than normal trees and also have a slight pattern on them.
With an Iron Axe, you’re able to only chop the smaller versions of these trees, which have a small chance of dropping Heartwood. While you can start getting Heartwood in this way, your chances of getting it increase significantly after youcraft the Wrought Iron Chopping Axe on a Weaponsmith Table(the non-basic version).
You’ll need to grind quite a bit in the game if you want to get to this point asyou need a ton of levels and Wrought Iron, which comes from Iron Ore.
Once you have this axe, you can start chopping down thicker trees with the same pattern as the smaller ones. These will take quite a lot of chops, but once you finish chopping them up,you’ll get around 30 - 60 Heartwood from each.
