Your first visit to Jungle Island inRivenis mostly a sightseeing expedition. You’ll find the Moiety viewing-glass and learn some key ciphers, but you won’t be able to do much else until you can access the village near the water. Once you return from Survey Island, you can unlock the rest of Jungle Island and really start to delve into its secrets.
Your primary task on Jungle Island is to make contact with the Black Moiety, Rivenese rebels committed to defeating Gehn. They’re well-hidden, so you’ll need all your investigation and codebreaking skills to find even a trace of them.

How To Unlock The Elevator And Submarine
Once you find the Golden Chamber onSurvey Island, you’ll be able to take Gehn’s personal tram to a hidden area of Jungle Island. Start bypressing the white button at the end of the hallwayto call the elevator, then climb aboard. On your right is a lever; pull it up midway (as far as it will go for now), then let go; the elevator will take you to the surface level. From there, you canturn a handle on your leftto open a path into the jungle, letting you freely come back and forth from the main area of the island.
Push the elevator lever up one more position, all the way to the top; this will take you to thewalkways in the jungle canopy.Use the zoetrope to open the rotating sphere andconnect the Starry Expanseinside. This is also a great time tovisit Prison Islandfor the first time if you haven’t already, since there is a piece of information there that you’ll need for an upcoming puzzle (see below).

When you get back from your detour, continue along the walkway past the sphere andclimb the stairs. Enter the tower you find andpull the left-hand lever. When the platform reaches the top, pull the right-hand leverto close the grate below; you’ll need to be able to stand on it later, and this saves you a long walk around the island.
Once you’ve completed these steps, return to the secret tram platform.Turn the car around like you did on Survey Island and disembark without leaving. On the opposite platform, you’ll find a corridor that leads to thesubmarine dock.Climb the stairs on the left andthrow the switchto extend the boarding ladder, then climb into the submarine to make your way to the village.

How To Operate The Submarine
The submarine doesn’t travel freely, instead moving on rails between five docking locations. The track is circular, and you canchange which direction the submarine travelsby using the bottom lever; if the lever is on the left, the submarine travelscounterclockwiseand if the lever is on the right it goesclockwise.
The stops areindicated by the nodes on the circular display. Starting from the bottom and going clockwise, they are:

To choose your destination, drag the lever on the circular displayto the node associated with your intended stop, thenpull the lever on the right. The submarine will automatically travel and dock; you won’t be able to move or disembark while the animation is playing, so just enjoy the sights below the water.
You can recall the submarine to the caves bypressing the blue buttonthere, just like calling a tram car.

How To Enter The Village
Once you have control of the submarine, take it to the Village center, the top-right position on the navigation console. There, you’ll find a crank that extends a bridge, allowing you into the previously-inaccessible area. There are a lot of ladders and ramps, so while you’re getting your bearings the first thing you should do islower the bridges to the left and rightso that you can enter the village from either side on foot, reducing your reliance on the submarine and backtracking.
There’s a lot to do here, but your main objective (which you know if you’ve spoken to Catherine on Prison Island) is tofind a way to contact the Moiety.

If you haven’t done so yet, collect the Moiety viewing-glassfrom the cliffs on the Jungle Island beach.
How To Use The Wooden Totems
Before you set out for the hideout, you must take the time tofind all the wooden totemsand the hidden symbols near them, which can be revealed with the viewing-glass. You’ll need these symbols, plus the Rivenese numbers noted on each totem, to prove to the Moiety that you’re a friend to Riven’s people.
you may learn the Rivenese number system at the schoolhouse, or just use the chart below.

The symbols are always the same, but theorder is randomized with each playthrough. This means that even if you know the symbols, you’llstill need to seek out the totemsto determine the correct order. All six symbols are hidden with invisible paint on Jungle Island, with a wooden Totem near the point where they are best viewed.
The totem has a wooden dial that can berotated by turning the nails around the outer edge.Use the viewing-glass to line up the strips of paint so that the orientation is correct, then take down the number denoted by the metal wedges inside using the Rivenese numbers:

All Wooden Totem Locations And Painted Symbols
Here’s how to find all six Moiety symbols and their totems:
Water Cave (Wahrk)
The very first cave you entered when you got off the tram from Temple Island had a totem in it, but the symbol would have been invisible without the viewing-glass.Return there nowand shut off the faucet on the basin over the pond.
While the water is stopped, look at the pond through the lens. The paint on the ceiling, reflected in the still water, will show a painting of a wahrk, the apex predator of Riven’s oceans.
Clear-Cut Forest (Frog)
This totem isjust across from the mine cart that you rode to Boiler Island. The symbol is a little hard to see, since it’s formed from themoths gathered on the ground near the main path. You may need to wait for them to settle, since they scatter as you pass by.
Once the moths are at rest, they for the shape of askinny frog.
Lone Tree (Tree)
Just outside the village, from the entrance nearest the schoolhouse, is a lone tree withflowers that glow when viewed through the lens. When you have access to the village, climb to the highest point. You’ll find a tower overlooking the tree.
Move the funnel on the rightunder the waterspoint, then hold the faucet hand open while the viewing-glass is active. After several seconds of continuous water flow, you’ll see theflowers on the tree bloom, creating a bright white glow in the lens.
Return to the ground level and visit the tree. From this angle, the flowers form asymbol of a treewhen seen through the viewing-glass. The totem is next to the tunnel that leads to the village from here.
Submerged Cavern (Leaf Bug)
This is probably the trickiest totem to find. Make sure all the bridges into the village are accessible, thendock the submarineon the bottom-right position on the navigation console. Climb to the wahrk-headed steam vent above andpull the leverto close it. The steam will be rerouted to a smaller vent near the dock.
As you may have read in Gehn’s notebook, organisms in Riven’s water make itwithdraw from heat. The steam and the heat from the submarine dock allow you toclimb to the seabed, but you can’t reach the hidden chamber below with the sub in the way.
Be sure the submarine is set to travelclockwise(the direction lever should be on the left), then move to the upper-right position. This brings you to the nearby dock from which you first entered the village.Run back to the first dock before the heater turns offand climb down. Flip the switch next to the wooden door; this will keep the heater on permanently.
Enter the wooden door and find thetotem at the back of the cave.Once you’ve got the number, look at the hole in the ceilingthrough the viewing-glass while standing directly underneath to see the leaf bug symbol.
Unlike most doors in the game, the door out of the cavern doesn’t need to be interacted with in order to open; just walk into it and it will push open automatically.
Deep Jungle (Toucan)
Go into the jungle and stand beneath the rotating sphere. Backtrack andlook for a steep slopeleading downward off the path. This leads to a hidden grove where a defaced totem stands.
The totem’s number wheel is missing - it’s beentaken to Gehn’s laboratory on Boiler Island. If you didn’t make a note of the number when you visited, you’ll have to go back there and check now. The fastest way is touse the sphere and travel via the Starry Expanse.
The toucan symbol is visible through the trees, though you’ll need toposition yourself just right to align the shapes, as they’re painted on multiple trunks at different depths.
Seaside Cliffs / Prison Island (Riven)
The largest symbol is paintedon the cliffs where you first found the viewing glass, but it’s too big to see except from a great distance. You’ll have toleave Jungle Island altogetherto get the correct angle.
Travel via the Starry Expanse toPrison Island.Climb through the hole in the railing as you approach the fortress andfollow the pathuntil you see the final totem. Take down its number, thenlook for a tree with Moiety daggers stuck in it.Interact with it to reveal a lens in the top, which you’re able to use to get a long-distance view of Jungle Island’s cliffs.
View the cliffs through your looking-glass to see the painted symbol in all its glory; the symbol of Riven itself, with the Golden Dome at the top and deep secrets hidden beneath.
If you haven’t already done so,climb the ladder behind the totemto reach the roof of the fortress and meet with Catherine briefly before returning to your quest.
How To Find The Black Moiety Hideout
When you’re ready, take the submarine to thelower left position on the navigation console. This is the grate that you closed earlier. Approach the panel andpress the bottom button. This will summon a small platform. When it arrives, press the middle buttonthen quickly stand on the platform and ride it to the upper scaffold.
Here, you’ll find a cell where a Moiety rebel is held prisoner.Operate the wheel on the rightto open the cell, then go inside.Use the viewing-glassto find a secret switch and hidden markings in the room behind, which will lead you to a dead end by the shore.
When you reach the water’s edge, turn aroundand activate the lamp on your left. Follow the lit tunnel, lighting the lamps as you go, until you see a door on your left. Open it and go inside. You’ll find aring of stones, each with a glyph depicting a different animal. Find the symbols that match those you found with the totems, andactivate them in the order denoted by the numbers in the idols.
Once again, the correct order of the symbols is randomized each time you start a new game. If you think you have the correct order but aren’t getting a result, the only thing you’re able to do is go back to the totems and double-check the numbers.
When the correct password is given, a lengthy sequence will play, culminating with a Linking Book appearing on a shelf on the far wall.Move the lens over the image on the page, then touch it to be transported to Tay, the Black Moiety’s world hidden from Gehn’s prying eyes.
