Age 233 is Gehn’s sanctum apart fromRiven, where he continues his schemes to return to D’Ni. It’s the climactic destination in the game, since you need to go there in order to defeat Gehn and to get the key piece of information that you need to rescue Catherine.
Your visit to 233 will be quite short overall, but you need to take some precise steps if you want to get the game’s best ending… and to avoid all the worst possible outcomes. Read on to complete your journey and complete your quest successfully.
How To Trap Gehn
When you first arrive in 233 afteractivating the Golden Dome, you’ll find yourself in a cage. As you probably surmised by now, Gehn has known you were in Riven from the moment you arrived, and was ready for you. He’ll come through the door in a few seconds and deliver a lengthy monologue, after which he’lltake the Trap Book from you.
Gehn suspects a trap, so he’lldemand that you go through the Trap Book first.You have to take the risk andtouch the page without hesitating; he’ll still be suspicious, but he’ll attempt to follow you, freeing you and trapping him.
This goes without saying, butdon’t use the Trap Book again after this point.Gehn won’t fall for the same trick twice.
If you consistently refuse to enter the Trap Book, Gehn will eventually decide it’s safer to just shoot you, ending the game.
What To Do In Age 233
There are a lot of optional object to interact with in and around the lab, but what you really need is inGehn’s bedroom.Take the ladder located along the wall between the door and the boiler. Read Gehn’s newest journal on the bedside table; if you go all the way to the last page, you may find the settings for the Imager by the window to play memories of Gehn’s wife and parents. This is optional, but playing all three memoriestriggers an Achievement / Trophy.
On the table next to the journal is asilver sphere.Pick it up andpress the button on the right side.It will play a sequence of sounds;note down or memorize the sequence, since you’ll need it to rescue Catherine. It’s different on each playthrough, so it’s impossible to rescue Catherine without defeating Gehn first and getting the sphere.
How To Leave Age 233
Getting out of Age 233 is much easier than getting into it. Go back to the main floor andpull the lever on the wall near the ladder.This opens the cage that Gehn had trapped you in. Next,turn on the boilerbehind the pedestal where the Linking Book rests bymoving the center handle to the right. Once it powers on, you canuse the Linking Bookto teleport to the workshop on Boiler Island.
