The meazels; one of the most infamous and annoying encounters inBaldur’s Gate 3. These corrupted little humanoids are all for making chaos however they can, and in the already inconvenientShadow-Cursed Lands, their shenanigans don’t go over well with your party.

The meazels almost seem perfectly designed to be a nuisance; they’re not particularly hard to kill, but their variety of abilities and their tendency to split your party up make this encounter trickier than it looks. But you’ve come to the right place to verify this battle goes in your favor.

Where To Find The Meazels

The meazels are ahidden encounter in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, and despite their persistent nature are actually quite easy to miss. The meazels can be found in anabandoned pottery warehouse (X: -35, Y: 8).

If you have the quest “Seek Protection from the Shadow Curse” quest, it will benorthwest of the marked ambush sitefor this mission.

How To Spot The Meazels

The reason this quest is so easy to miss is becausethe meazels areInvisible, either until you spot them or you begin combat with them.

There are a few ways to spot the meazels before they spot you. The first is tobe able to see Invisibility, either through the spell See Invisibility or anElixir of See Invisibility.

If you got theErsatz Eye from Voloearlier in the game, you will automatically be able to see Invisibility.

However, there is a way to see the meazels, no magic required. Each character in your party will be able topassively make a Perception check (DC 18)when you get close enough to the abandoned warehouse. If you succeed, the meazels will become visible.

How To Prepare For The Fight

Preparing for the meazel fight involves two steps;making sure the meazels don’t get a Surprise round, and making sureyour casters are able to do more than just sling spells.

Because the meazels are Invisible and ready to ambush you, it is easy for them to get a Surprise round. In order to take away this advantage from them, make sure you spot them before combat. If you can see them (either by seeing Invisibility or by succeeding the Perception check), you canattack first and give your party the surprise round.

If you can’t see them, though, don’t worry! If you know where they are, you candrop an AOE spell on themto hit them first and still get your Surprise round!

One meazel can be foundon top of each of the wooden shelves, one isto the right of the entranceon the floor, and one is in the middle ofthe very back of the roomnear the ledge.

If youhave the Alert feat, the meazels will not get their Surprise round;instead, combat will begin as usual, with neither group getting Surprise.

If only one of your party members has the Alert feat, send them into combat alone, then have the rest of your party join later. That way, your other non-Alert party members don’t get Surprised.

You’ll also want tomake sure to gear up your casters, since meazels can silence party members, making them unable to cast spells. Make sure they have weapons they can swing in case they need to fight with their fists.

How To Fight The Meazels

Now that these little pests have been spotted and can’t get the jump on you, you’re ready to squash them once and for all.

Garrote (action)

-Deals 3d6 bludgeoning damage on a hit

-Silences Garroted creature

-Deals an additional 3d6 bludgeoning damage per turn

if the Garroted creature is within 5m of you

-Lasts for up to 10 turns

Shadowy Teleport (bonus action)

-Teleport to a shadowy location up to 30m away

-Garroted creatures teleport with you

In Tactician and Honour Mode, the meazel’s hit points increase to 88. However, all of their abilities remain the same.

The meazels are intelligent creatures, and will strategize how to best separate and kill your party. Given that there are four meazels, the meazels willdivide up and target different charactersas combat progresses.

Each meazel willtry to Garrote a non-Garroted creature, until each party member is Garroted. You can use this to your advantage byspacing out your party membersso the meazels have towaste their action Dashing to new party members.

Once Garroted, you willtake bludgeoning damage every turnwhile nearby the meazel Garroting you. To end this effect, you canwalk more than 5m away from the meazelto break the Garrote.

This all seems easy enough, but there are two catches to being Garroted; first, being Garroted silences you, meaning you can’t cast spells, and second, meazels will teleport Garroted creatures aroundusing their Shadowy Teleport.

The meazels willteleport Garroted creatures into the Shadow-Curseto double down on the passive damage you are taking each round. The best way to negate this is tomake sure your character has an active light source on them, either by having them wield a lit torch or casting theLightcantrip on them.

If you have alreadyspoken to the pixie in the moonlantern, your party will be immune to the effects of the Shadow-Curse. Likewise, Shadowheart is always immune to the Shadow-Curse. Use these boons to your advantage!

For your casters, it is key that youmake sure they are armed before combatsince their casting may be limited. Give each of them amelee weapon and good armorso they can hold their own without their fancy magic.

The Silenced effect also means you cannot cast spells that are tied to magic items you have, so don’t rely on those spells, either.

If you keep these tips in mind, defeating the meazels should be relatively easy. They have alow Armor Class and no damage resistances or immunities, so a few good weapon attacks or strong spells should slay them quickly.

What Are The Rewards?

There are not many rewards for defeating the meazels; a bitter end to an annoying encounter, unfortunately. Each meazel has a few coins and a spool of rope on their bodies that can be looted.

The meazels, in ascending order, have one gold piece, two gold pieces, three gold pieces, and four gold pieces on their bodies. Larian Studios must think they’resoclever!

The other small reward you’re able to find after this encounter is awooden chest on a shelf at the back of the warehouse. In order to get to the shelf, you must eitherbe able to Jump high enough. If you’re just not strong enough, however, don’t worry; your strong character canThrow you onto the shelf as well!

This chest can either be lockpicked open, or you canuse the Potter’s Key to open the chest.Finding the Potter’s Key isn’t too difficult, but it does require asuccessful passive Investigation chest to spot.

When you get near the entrance to the warehouse, your characters will make an Investigation check. On a success, you willspot a moveable brick in the stone wall. Interacting with this brick will give you the Potter’s Key.

Inside the wooden chest is a note and an idol to Selûne. More impressive, though, are theLuminous Gloves, whichinflict Radiant Orb on enemies when the wearer deals Radiant damage; perhaps they can bring you a bit of light in this dark and terrifying environment.

And, when you’re done exploring the potter’s warehouse, you cancontinue down the stairs at the back of the buildingto explore the ruined tower below!
