Baatar is the second boss to appear inThe Rogue Prince of Persia. They behave quite differently to any other enemy you’ll encounter thus far. They hit hard, summon minions, and have platforming puzzles in the middle of the fight.

To be victorious you need to master the game’s acrobatic mechanics as much as you’ll need traditional combat skills and good gear. This makes Baatar a consistently winnable boss fight once you learn how to handle everything they’re able to throw at you. Here’s all you need to know about how to defeat the magical menace and reach the palace beyond.

Baatar summons flying bombs to chase the Prince

How To Evade All Of Baatar’s Attacks

Baatar largely plays fairly with their attack patterns. You’ll most often take damage because you dodged in the wrong direction or were in the wrong position to block an attack completely. Once you learn all of Baatar’s moves and how to evade them, you can focus instead of dealing damage when openings appear.

Summon Bombs

Baatar will channel for a few moments and thensummon flying bomb drones around the arena. These will fly towards the prince and then self-destruct, in the same manner as the bomb drones in the grand library.

Don’t try to attack the bombs, insteadjust run in straight lines through them. You’ll pass safely through the explosion radius in the time it takes for them to detonate. Running away from the bombs delays having to deal with them and allows Baatar to use other attacks that will stack on top of dodging the bombs.

Baatar channels a horizontal beam attack against the prince

Horizontal Beams

Baatar will float towards the middle of the map and sheath their hands in black energy.A portal appears on the horizontal edge of the map. After a moment it spits outa beam attack. This attack repeats twice, plus an additional time for each phase.

These can be avoided by moving vertically.

Spinning Beams

Baatar will float above the centre of the arena and black energy will form between their horns. This will project a spinning beam that strafes across the arena twice.

You have to block these using terrain. While the attack is charging, shadows will become more pronounced. The well-lit areas are safe from the attack, found in the corners to the bottom right and left.

Baatar charges a strafing beam attack. The Prince needs to hide behind cover to avoid it

After you’ve defeated the first phase,Baatar will always follow this attack with Vertical Beams.

Vertical Beams

Baatar will slam onto the ground, which sendsbubbles with miasma. After a few moments, the entire screen is engulfed in dark energy from below the arena, blocked only by a couple of raised platforms on the upper level of each arena.

This combines the mechanics of the horizontal and spinning beams. The arena will darken, with lighter patches where you are allowed to safely stand. You need to position yourself on solid ground in the upper layer of the arena, which will block the eruption.

How To Damage Baatar

Between attacks, Baatar willbecome exhausted for several secondsand slump on the ground. This is when they’re vulnerable. You’ll want to do adive attack first to break their shields, and then can use whichever attack pattern or tool gives you the greatest damage.

If you havemedallions that inflict damaging statuses, they will persist after Baatar recovers. Combination status effects likepoison-resin and resin-fire are very effective.

Baatar becomes vulnerable after casting a spell, letting the prince approach and attack

With a level ten weapon and an elemental combo, you can defeat each phase in one or two bursts of damage. Otherwise, you can expect it to take longer.

Baatar can also be damaged during their attacks. All abilities except the spinning and vertical beams leave them vulnerable to hit-and-run tactics, which are especially effective if you have medallions that can activate from a single hit. Applying poison or burning effects by vaulting over, shooting from range, or dive-attacking Baatar can deal lots of damage, though dive attacks become less effective as the arenas become more sparse.

How To Defeat Baatar’s Second And Third Phase

Each timeyou deal one-third of Baatar’s health as damage, they will retreat upwards to another arena. You need to climb quickly to chase them as the miasma below the arena begins to overflow.

There are climbing paths available on both the left and right sides of the arena. The right side is marginally easier, but where you’re positioned at the end of the phase will often choose for you which way to go.

The Prince runs up a wall to escape a horizontal beam cast by Baatar. The second phase arena has fewer safe spots to hide from attacks.

Falling into the miasma deals damage butteleports you up to the next patch of stable ground. It is possible to fail every climbing challenge in the boss fight and still win.

Baatar’s Second Phase

Phase Two introducesone new attackin the vertical beams and adds complexity to the other attacks.

Baatar’s Third Phase

Baatar’s final phase doesn’t introduce any new attack patterns but tightens the margins on avoiding the existing ones.

If you have the damage to get through the first two phases, the third shouldn’t pose too much of an additional challenge. With longer attack patterns and fewer opportunities to attack, damage over time effects are even more valuable.

Baatar summons explosive drones to attack the prince. The third phase arena has almost no cover from his beam attacks.

When Baatar is defeated you will be able to reach the besieged palace.
