Side quests contribute heavily to the robust world-building inDragon’s Dogma 2, with certain substories offering more than a simple fetch quest. The Phantom Oxcart may sound like a simple ghost tale, but it has much more sinister implications for the game’s political climate.
Whether you’re in it for the lore or the loot, The Phantom Oxcart delivers the good with unexpected twists and a solid completion reward. However, you’ll need to make some progress in your journey through Vermund if you want to trigger The Phantom Oxcart quest.

How To Start The Phantom Oxcart Quest
Once you’vefinished Nation of the Lambent Flameand successfully entered Battahlyou’ll begin to hear rumblings of a Phantom Oxcartthat can only be seen at night.
To get some more concrete details, head back to theWest Oxcart Stand in Vernworthand look around until yousee two men talkingabout the Oxcart, triggering The Phantom Oxcart quest.

If you don’t see the two men, rest and return to the location, and you’ll eventually hear their conversation.
How To Find The Phantom Oxcart
From here, there will be an objective marker on your map indicating where The Phantom Oxcart has been sighted, but you’ll need towait until nighttime to get the oxcart to appear.
Once it’s night, make your way out of Vernworthtoward the northeast, then follow the road over thewooden bridgetoward themarker.

After crossing the bridge, get off the roadand move slowly along therightside, near the bushes.
The Phantom Oxcart will appear, but be careful, as you must approach slowly and remainunseento hear the conversation betweenMansennand thesoldier.

The conversation will end, butstay out of sightand do not approach Mansenn or the soldier yet.
Let Mansenn leave with the oxcart, then turn your attention toward the soldier.

Dealing With The Soldier
When you approach, thesoldier will attempt to flee.
Runafter him and press “Grab” when you are in rangeto apprehend the soldier, triggering a conversation.
During the conversation, the soldier will admit that he has been aiding Mansenn in a pawn smuggling operation.
He then attempts tobribeyou, presenting a choice:
Regardlessof whether youdenyoracceptthe bribe, you will still receive theMerchant’s Documentitem needed to progress the quest.
Once you’ve made your choice andreceived the Merchant’s Document, it’s time tobring it toour good friendCaptain Brant at the Stardropp Inn, who will assist in making sense of the oxcart and this pawn smuggling operation.
Brant tells you his suspicions about a royal court member’s involvement buttells you to go gather more evidencefor now.
How To Gather Evidence Of Smuggling
You’ll want tohead back to the same location at nightthat you did last time, but this time around you’re going toinfiltrate The Phantom Oxcart.
Tell your pawns to “Wait"somewhere far away andout of sightas you approach the area near the bridge.
Then, strip off all your armor, weapons, and ringsto disguise yourself as a pawn being picked up by the oxcart.
If you leave your rings on, you willscareMansenn off.
Approach Mansenn and the cart slowly from the road, slightly off to the side, but don’t frighten him.
If Mansenn gets spooked for whatever reason, you mustreturn the next nightand try again.
He will eventually stop and talk to you, even if you have spooked him before.
Blend in with the pawns whilelistening to Masenn drone onand on, giving his thoughts about pawns.
Along the route, you’ll be attacked by a group ofgoblins.
Fight them offand return to the cart to continue along with the journey.
Eventually, you will arrive at theCheckpoint Rest Townand are shown off to a few guards, who proceed to beat you.
Sit there andtake the beating to avoid drawing suspicion; after a minute, they will stop, and you can continue your trip on the oxcart.
Eventually, you will reach your destination:The Spellseal Door in Bakbattahl.
You arrive at the door and are quicklyoutedby someone who recognizesthat you aren’t a pawn.
The soldiers all attack, so you mustdefeat the entire group of enemieswith your pawns.
Bring these toCaptain Brantat the Stardrop Inn.
