The Underdarkis a region known well inBaldur’s Gate 3for being an unforgiving, cruel environment. While it can bode well for adventurers desperate to avoid the grasp ofThe Absoluteorthe Shadow-Cursed Lands, it still deserves its harsh reputation, not only for its countless enemies, but its tendency to drive its residents mad.

Filro the Forgotten is a prime example of both of these threats. Once a drow denizen of the Underdark, he has gone mad over the years and now attacks anything that moves. Well, besides his “lovely” hook horrors. Talk about a face only a mother could love. While Filro the Forgotten’s fight isn’t particularly hard, it is certainly a surprising encounter, so being prepared is the key to defeating him swiftly.

ATTACKS:

Quarterstaff

Filro will begin combat bycasting Hypnotic Patternon as many of your party members as he can. For this reason, you will want tospread outso fewer of your party members are in the range of Filro’s AOE spells.

You canrecruit Sovereign Glutfrom the Myconid Colonybefore going on this quest. Gut can bea powerful ally in this fight, and hisAnimating Sporescan give you another allied party member in the fight.

Dealing With Hypnotic Pattern

Hypnotic Pattern is a dangerous spell, not only because it makes youunable to control party members, but because those affected willautomatically fail on the hook horror’s Pounce saving throw.

The two ways to rid yourself of the hypnotism are tobreak Filro’s concentrationor totake damage. If you can’t reach Filro, it may finally be time to stab a party member, or you could use the Help action, it’s your choice.

After he casts Hypnotic Pattern his first turn, Filro willswitch to using Mirror Image. Once Mirror Image is up, he willMisty Step into meleeand blast your party withThunderwave to knock them back.

Once his higher-level slots are burned, he will useTasha’s Hideous Laughter or Sleeptoknock party members proneso the hook horror gets its Multiattack. Lastly, he willsling Fire Boltsat party members from a range.

There is a chance Filro willrun or Misty Steponto the tree branch if it gives him more opportunity to attack party members. Make sure to be mobile andkeep your eye out for climbable terrainto reach him easily if he tries to run.

The Hook Horror

Filro does enter combat withone hook horror nearbyhim. The hook horror is not particularly difficult, but it cansummon its allieswith its Echoes in the Dark ability, so take it out quickly, butprioritize Filro.

To make sure Filro doesn’t get any unnecessary allies, attempt to keep combat on the stone steps and in Filro’s encampment. If you stay within the area pictured above,no other hook horror allies will join combat, unless Echoes in the Dark successfully goes off.

Using The Sussur Flower

Or, you could stop Filro from casting altogether; his location makes it very easy touse the Sussur Floweragainst him. These Sussur Flowers can be found on theSussur Tree nearbyand create anantimagic fieldwhenever someone iscarrying one or a nearby one.

Simply place a Sussur Flower on one of your non-casting party members and get themas close to Filro as possibleto inflict him with the antimagic field.

Using the antimagic properties of the Sussur Flower against Filrothrows off his strategy, as he relies heavily on his casting. Once nearby, Filro will resort tousing his quarterstaffon the party member in melee.

The Sussur Flower’s antimagic field willalso affect your casting party members. Make sure they are out of melee range of the flower so they can be at peak performance.

Once Filro is unable to cast, it is easy to take him out. He hardly deals any damage with his quarterstaff, and can easily besurprise attacked if you went invisibleor taken out by melee fighters.

As long as your casters are out of range of the Sussur Flower effects and your melee fighters are up close and personal with Filro, taking him out is no problem at all.

Although Filro is on a cliff and pushing him is tempting, wedo not recommend this option, as it will put him out of range of the Sussur Flower andbring another hook horror into combat. The fall damage will not be enough to kill him unless he isalready low on health.

Rewards

Defeating Filro the Forgotten will give you access to his inventory, which containsa few low-level scrolls, his quarterstaff, and his robes. More significantly,Filro has two quest itemsused to wrap up other storylines andobtain powerful weapons.
