The marketing ofStellar Blademight lead you to believe the game’s interests are only skin deep, but the developers have put just as much effort into their combat as they have Eve’s character model. The opening hours ease you in to the flow of the action, allowing you to explore the world and take on fodder enemies before presenting you with a real challenge.

The first boss fight is with a Naytiba referred to as Abaddon, a creature with a split head and a pair of swords. Defeating it will require the use of every mechanic the game has taught you so far, but if you parry and dodge at the right times, you should kill it with ease.

How To Defeat Abaddon

Abaddon is the first boss fight in the game, and won’t have you pulling your hair out as a result. It mostlyserves as an early skill checkto make sure you understand basic combat mechanics, testing you on what has been previously tutorializedwithout pushing you to your limits.

At close range,it will unleash a variety of melee strikes; sometimes they will be single strikes, and other times they’ll come in a flurry, up to three hits at a time. They’re easy toparryonce you understand the timing, andexecuting multiple in a row will quickly drain its Balance, leaving it groggy so you canunleash massive damage with Retribution.

As you’re fighting, Abaddonmay throw out an attack that’s accompanied by a blue flashing effect. This is to signal that the attack cannot be parried or blocked, andyou must perform a Blink to avoid being hurt, which is done bydodging forward through your attackerand letting you counterattack from behind them.

If you’re overwhelmed or need to heal, you can continuously dodge away and put space between the two of you. However, you’ll need towatch out for Abaddon’s lunging attack (accompanied by a yellow flash) that must be dodged. Any attempt to block or parry will cause you to take damage.

When you remove about one-third of Abaddon’s health bar,it will enter the second phase of the fight, summoning a lightning field. All lightning strikes must be dodged, after which you can close the distance and continue slashing away at it.

It may periodically jump away from you andshoot lightning from its swords. Avoid these strikes, and go back on the offensive.

The key to winning this fight is staying close to the boss;aggressive play is encouraged, since even defensive maneuvers like parrying lead to you dealing massive damage. If you drain the beast’s balance and unleash combos when it isn’t attacking, you’ll cleave through Abaddon’s health bar incredibly quickly.

At the end of the fight, there’s a quick time event; press L1 and you’ll vanquish your foe for good, but if you fail, it’ll come back with a sliver of life left.Defeating Abaddon rewards you with a Weapon Core, which can be used to upgrade your sword at campsites.
