Summary
Many console developers have risen and fallen over the decades that span the video games industry. Sega and Atari, who once seemed like unstoppable juggernauts, fell to the wayside in the face of Nintendo’s reach and the birth of new competitors inPlayStationand Xbox. Nowadays, PlayStation consoles are some of the best-selling in the world.
In fact, Sony has never really slowed down since they gained success with the original PlayStation. From cartridge-based origins with Nintendo to pioneering Blu-Ray, PlayStation consoles have never had a shortage of games. That said, some of Sony’s consoles definitely had a few more choices when it came to software.

How Many PlayStation Consoles Are There?
Before we can get into the nitty-gritty of which console actually has the most games, it would be helpful to have a breakdown of every console Sony has actually made. Unlike most of its competitors, PlayStation consoles have some of the simplest naming conventions out there. You can’t really miss them or not in what order they released. Let’s take a look.
1994

PlayStation 2
2000
2004
PlayStation 3
2006
2011
PlayStation 4
2013
PlayStation 5
2020
Although the original PlayStation is sometimes called the PSX, there is actually another multimedia device made by Sony and only released in Japan actually called the PSX.
Pretty hard to lose track of which PlayStation came out when it did. Nice and simple sequential numbering. There are a lot more sub-systems in there as well, especially when it comes to the PSP, though they fundamentally do not change how the base console works, so we’re classing them as only a single console each.
PlayStation 1 And 2 Have Over 4,000 Games
Now, there’s no PlayStation console generation that could be unreservedly called a failure. Yes, people like to claim the PS3 has no games, and again with the PS5, thoughthere are, in fact, still games. Now that being said, neither of them are the PlayStation console with the most games.
However, rather humorously, it’s actually quite difficult to say which console has the most games. Sources vary on whether or not it’sthe original PlayStation, or the PlayStation 2. Both have over4,000 games each, though combined with various region-exclusive games, getting down the exact number is pretty difficult.
If we want to edge it out by merit of backwards compatibility, we can say thatthe PlayStation 2 has the most games of any PlayStation console.
The PlayStation 3 Has Around 2,000 Games
On the flip side of that, it can be fun to know which of Sony’s consoles had the least amount of games on it, too. None of them are failures, sure, but some are clearly less successful than others.
And yes,the PS3, in terms of consoles that have closed their cycle fully, has the least games of all the PlayStation consoles. At a still respectable2,000 approximate games, it’s more than you might have expected. Though still less than the PSP and PS Vita (~2,235 and ~5,568, respectively).
The PS5 is the actual record holder at present. Almost four years on from its initial release, the PS5 currently stands at around 600 games, a far cry from the 2,000 of the next smallest console. Will the PS5 actually manage to beat the record held by the PS3? Only time will tell.
