Applying status conditions has always been an effective strategy inElden Ring, and that strategy is more powerful than ever inShadow of the Erdtree. The DLC adds a new upgrade to the classic sleep status in ‘Eternal Sleep.’

As the name implies, it sets your opponents to sleep. But where the regular sleep status would allow your foes to eventually wake up, Eternal Sleep sends them into an eternal slumber from which there is no escape. Whether you’re looking to inflict Eternal Sleep or protect yourself from it, this guide will give you everything you need.

Elden Ring Shadow Of The Erdtree Eternal Sleep Grease

How Does Eternal Sleep Work?

Eternal Sleepworks the same as other status conditionsin Elden Ring. A status bar in the middle of the screen will notify you when you start to build up Eternal Sleep. Once the bar is full, you slip into an eternal slumber from which there is no waking.

This effectively kills the playerin much the same way as the Deathblight condition, but far less gruesomely.

Elden Ring Shadow Of The Erdtree Drawstring Eternal Sleep Grease

Inflicting Eternal Sleep on others works the same as inflicting the regular sleep condition. You’ll need touse either a weapon with Eternal Sleepbuilt-in, enhance your weapon usingEternal Sleep grease, orthrow Eternal Sleep Potsat foes.

It might take a while, but once Eternal Sleep takes hold, a purple mist will appear above the enemy’s head and they’ll lay down to sleep. Unlike regular sleep, attacking enemies afflicted with Eternal Sleep doesn’t wake them. This allows you to freely dispatch these enemies to collect their runes.

Elden Ring Shadow Of The Erdtree Eternal Sleep Pot

Eternal Sleep will only keep regular, non-boss enemies asleep. Boss-type enemies will eventually wake up. However, some bosses are more susceptible to sleep than others. The Godskin Duo, for example, is vulnerable to sleep and will continue to doze for many seconds.

Against other players, Eternal Sleep seems towork the same as regular sleep, causing the player to become dazed for a second or so. This leaves them open to attack. It also drains their FP at a significant rate.

Items That Apply Eternal Sleep

There are several newitemsadded in Shadow of the Erdtreethat can apply Eternal Sleep. Here they are in no particular order.

Crafting Materials

Like other greases in Elden Ring,Eternal Sleep Greasecoats your weapon to inflict Eternal Sleepwhen it strikes an enemy. The coating lasts for 60 seconds.

TheDrawstring Eternal Sleep Greaseworks the same as the Eternal Sleep Grease exceptfor bow armaments. However, unlike regular weapon greases, Drawstring Greases only last 15 seconds.

Elden Ring Shadow Of The Erdtree Stimulating Boluses

The Eternal Sleep pot allows you tothrow status-inflicting pots at enemies. Like other pots, theEternal Sleep Pothas a relatively short range but applies the condition in a fairly large purple cloud. This item requires FP to throw.

The Eternal Sleep status buildup willscale with your Arcane stat.

Velvet Sword of St. Trina

Theonly weapon in the game that can apply Eternal Sleep without greaseis theVelvet Sword of St. Trina. This weapon is found in the Stone Coffin Fissure area near the Fissure Cross site of grace.

Fans of the original Sword of St. Trina will find the Velvet Sword of St. Trina to be very similar. It has slightly more magic damage than the regular Sword of St. Trina, and its skill, Mists of Eternal Sleep, works similarly as well. Itproduces a purple cloud in front of the player that applies Eternal Sleep.

Additionally, the skill also causes the Velvet Sword of St. Trina to glow purple, boosting the amount of Eternal Sleep the sword already applies with each regular attack(the effect is similar to the boost provided by applying Eternal Sleep Grease).

How To Protect Yourself From Eternal Sleep

Protecting yourself from Eternal Sleep is done thesame way you’d protect yourself from regular sleep.

The simplest way to protect yourself from Eternal Sleep is toraise your Focus by improving your Mind stat. This slows the rate at which the player builds sleep and Eternal Sleep.

You can alsoconsumeStimulating Bolusesto immediately eliminate the amount of sleep and Eternal Sleep you’ve accumulated, but note that this cannot be consumed after the bar is full as you’d be asleep and unable to eat anything.

Finally, theLuciditysorcery has a similar effect to Stimulating Boluses. It requires 17 Intelligence to learn, costs 10 FP to cast, and it is dropped by Preceptor Mirian in theCarian Study Hall.
