Summary

Tuesday’s Nintendo Directwas chock-full of surprises across its 40-minute runtime. Among those surprises werethe re-reveal of Metroid Prime 4, anew entry in the Legend of Zelda franchiseanda new Mario & Luigi title. That said, hidden among the massive revealswas the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Aracde Classics compilation.

Like its name suggests, the title is a massive collection of retro fighting games, including X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes. It’s a major get for arcade fighting game enthusiasts, and it’ll be out before the end of the year. However, noticeably absent from the reveal trailer was an announcement for Xbox.

Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics will be available onPlayStation 4,Nintendo SwitchandPC via Steam, but notXbox. It was a strange decision, considering that nearly every previous Marvel vs. Capcom has been on Microsoft consoles. It’s true.Marvel vs. Capcom 2 saw a release on the original Xboxas well as a re-release onXbox 360.Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds launched on the 360, and the last Marvel vs. Capcom title, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite was onXbox One.

In other words, there’s a rich history of the crossover fighter on Xbox. And because of that, fans wererightfully upset that the compilation fighter would be skipping their console of choice. Oddly enough, there might be a reason why it’s skipping Xbox.

The MT Framework Engine Is The Reason To Blame

Accordingto reporting from Twitter user Jawmuncherandcorroborated by Windows Central, Capcom’s MT Framework engine is the reason why the game won’t be making its way to Xbox consoles. The older MT Framework titles aren’t necessarily the easiest to port over to Xbox’s ERA system. In fact, according to Windows Central, it’s an expensive process, which is why Capcom has decided to skip Xbox altogether.

And as Jawmuncher notes in their post, other Capcom titles have not made their way to Xbox consoles for likely the same reason. Those titles includeMonster Hunter Stories, as well asthe Mega Man Battle Network collection. PreviousMega Man compilation titles did come to Xbox.

Considering that this is a potential trend, it would probably behoove Capcom to get out in front of the rumors. And if money is the reason why, then perhaps Microsoft can lend a hand. After all, Marvel vs. Capcom is as much a legacy Xbox title as it is a PlayStation one.
