Helldivers 2is very unique in that it’s a game shaped by the actions of its players. With games master Joel deciding every move that the Automatons and Terminids make, developer Arrowhead is able to construct elaborate narratives and play reactively with the game’s community, andthere is no finer example of that than Malevelon Creek, the planetfondly remembered as Robot Vietnam.

Players have been battling for control of the Creek ever since launch, mostly down to it becoming this fan-favorite planet that rose in legend with each passing week. People were even trying to liberate it to the detriment of every other Major Order that was announced, withthe game’s own community manager telling players to lay off. Clearly done with their shenanigans, the game’s most recent Major Order tasked players with liberating the Creek once and for all, a task that was easily accomplished.

Now that Malevelon Creek is out of Automaton hands, and that the planet has been successfully defended, many Helldivers 2 players are hoping to put the entire ordeal behind them. However, the fighting for the Creek was so intense that it shouldn’t become a forgotten piece of Helldivers 2 lore, which is why developer Arrowhead announced earlier today that it has officially made April 3 an in-universe holiday called Malevelon Creek Memorial Day, to remember those lost during the fight.

Not only that, but Arrowhead has also gifted every player in the game a “Fallen Hero’s Vengeance” cape that you may wear into battle to “carry the memory of their fallen companions into battle”. It should be ready and waiting for you when you log in today, if you haven’t already, though be aware there are reports of people not actually getting the rewards for liberating Malevelon Creek, and that it might take a little while to show up.

Now that the Malevelon Creek saga is finally over, players can get back to fighting on the more important fronts, though it’s pretty great how players held such a deep love for the Creek that the whole affair has now managed to actually affect established Helldivers 2 lore. More importantly, Joel now knows not to mess with the Creek, or he’ll risk diverting the entire Helldivers 2 fanbase away from more important tasks. Or maybe that’s his actual goal? Damn you Joel, get out of our heads!
