Summary

TheFalloutseries has given us some of the most engaging RPG experiences in gaming. The post-apocalyptic setting is ripe not only for unique stories, but different gameplay styles as well. As RPGs, Fallout lets you explore the Wasteland and engage in small-scale, personal adventures.

However, having the series explore new genres would allow the scope to expand. It would allow you to see the Wasteland in an all new light, and engage with it in fresh ways, all the while taking place in the setting that we’ve come to know and love.

8Narrative-Driven

Amazon’s Fallout TV series has proven that player agency is not necessary to tell a good Fallout story. Just being a viewer along for the ride is excellent for introducing new players to the setting while also giving veteran players a chance to appreciate things from a new perspective. However, this isn’t to say player interaction has to be removed entirely.

Having a few yet impactful choices can be just as engaging as having many choices down the line. With the world of Fallout having so many different characters to follow outside just those connected to the vaults, a narrative-driven experience has incredible potential.

7Real-Time Strategy

Fallout’s Wasteland is full of powerful factions constantly fighting for dominance. TheBrotherhood of Steel, Enclave, NCR, Caesar’s Legion, and the Institute all make their presence known throughout the series in big ways. Throughout the games, we mostly see their conflicts through the lens of a single soldier, mostly in smaller skirmishes.

The different weapons and methods of combat these factions utilize would make an adaption to real-time strategy easy. Similar to Dawn of War Dark Crusade’s single-player mode, a Fallout RTS could see you fighting to expand your territory all across the United States while your enemies fight among themselves.

6City Builder

The Fallout games have a few different themes spread across their many entries, with one of the most prominent being renewal. Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 emphasized this idea through the introduction of base-building mechanics, but it’s been there since the series began. It’s fascinating to see the different ways in which separate pockets of humanity have risen from the ashes to overcome hardship together.

With so many iconic cities in the series like Megaton, New Vegas, and Emerald City, it would be a treat to be able to make your own. Starting as a fledgling civilization fighting off radroaches and raiders, you may foster your Wasteland settlement until it becomes a bustling haven from the surrounding wastes.

5Powerwash Simulator

Powerwash Simulator has proven to be a breakout success thanks to its relaxing yet satisfying gameplay loop. When it was just cleaning various contemporary structures like suburban homes and fences, the game was enjoyable in a casual sense. However, the introduction of crossovers has allowed the privilege of cleaning all kinds of places ranging from 40K dreadnaughts to Bikini Bottom.

And what setting deserves a deep cleaning more than the rad-soaked Wasteland of Fallout? Powerwash Simulator would offer the chance for you to get up close with all kinds of fallout iconography. Cleaning off the interior of vaults, power armor suits, or giant robots like Liberty Prime would be a cleaner’s dream come true.

4Survival Horror

The Wastelands of Fallout are home to some truly terrifying creatures. You never know when you’re going to stumble across a den of deadly ghouls ora cave full of ravenous Deathclaw. Thankfully, the games have always provided extensive means to deal with these threats, as a horde of ghouls is far less intimidating when you’re in a suit of power armor and wielding a massive minigun.

But if these combat options weren’t available to you, it would be quite natural to be more fearful. Navigating the natural obstacles of the Wasteland while staying away from its deadly inhabitants without so much as a Ripper to keep you safe could lend itself to some truly tense moments.

3Dungeon Crawler

Part of any Fallout game is scavenging around to keep yourself in tip-top shape. The ruins of the old world are home to all kinds of loot, like simple ammunition to whole new weapons and armor. These items can be found anywhere from supermarkets, to raider lairs, to underground dens full of radioactive monsters. Of course, this is only a side activity, as quests are far more lucrative means of earning gear and caps.

But a game built around the idea of stripping these Wasteland ruins dry of all their goods sounds like a great time. Whether you’re working on behalf of a settlement or scavenging for yourself, there is a certain thrill to taking the plunge into these dangerous zones to uncover real treasures nearly lost beneath the rubble.

2Roguelike

Fallout has always allowed you toexplore different buildsthanks to a combination of the iconic S.P.E.C.I.A.L stat system, perks, and a large arsenal of weapons. These can radically alter your playstyle and how you approach encounters. However, it can be rather exhausting to start a new game every time you want to attempt an alternative way of play.

Which is where a roguelike would thrive. Perhaps built around different vault dwellers sent out to explore the Wasteland, each equipped with their unique set of skills, a roguelike could let you expedite the level-up process rapidly through short quick encounters where death sees a total reset. But each of these excursions into the Wasteland could lend the vault more supplies to make subsequent runs occur with better equipment.

1Business Management

When it comes to surviving in Fallout’s Wastelands, fighting plays a large role in staying alive. Despite this, throughout the series, you’ll come across plenty of characters who have chosen the less violent path. Wandering merchants, doctors, and mechanics all lend their skills to something aside from killing to earn their keep.

A business management game would offer a chance to overcome whole new challenges. Instead of keeping yourself alive, you’ll have to worry about keeping a business afloat in the post-apocalypse. Whether it entails haggling with customers for their caps, protecting your goods from raiders, or acquiring merchandise through shady mercs, a business sim could offer a very different perspective of Wasteland survival.
