Summary

If you’re a budget-conscious gamer and also happen to be an avidFinal Fantasy 14player, then you’ll want to know that in about a month’s time, your bill may get a tad bit more expensive. How expensive? Well, that depends on where exactly you’re located.

According to a release from Square Enix, beginning on June 25, “all customer transactions on the Final Fantasy 14 Online Store and Mog Station, including game subscriptions, will be subject to any state or local sales tax, where applicable.” That change will also apply to recurring subscriptions made by a credit card and those using Crysta.

A statement from Square Enix about Final Fantasy 14 tax increases.

Because sales taxes can vary based on one’s location, Square Enix recommends that players make sure that the address registered on their profile is correct. Otherwise, you may be subject to incorrect charges. The Lodestone notice also says additional notices and information will come out in future updates.

Final Fantasy 14 Price Increases Won’t Affect Everyone

It’s also important to note that this change will not affect everyone. That’s because there are states like California that do not tax digital goods. More so, there are also several states that do not have sales tax altogether, like Oregon and Alaska. In other words, you may not be affected at all.

Regardless, the change will happen just three days beforethe scheduled early access period for Dawntrail. So if you happen to be in a state or area that will be impacted, and you also happen to have an interest in Dawntrail, it might make sense to get that preorder in.

For most of the NA world, sales tax on digital goods and services has been normal. It was actually surprising that FFXIV had gone so long without them. Really, the update is simply a formality of sorts.

Speaking of finances,it appears that issues surrounding Visa card payments still haven’t been sorted out. Back in April, a new payment processor had been implemented and players reported that Visa debit card transactions were not processing as they should.

Square has acknowledged those reports and is reportedly “working closely with our partners to address the issue and will share an update as soon as we have more information.” In the interim, players are encouraged to use a different payment method, like PayPal.
