Summary
TheFalloutseries is known to have some of thebest written characters in RPGs. From comic relief to philosophical maestros, these characters all have a unique tale to tell and spin the story in such interesting ways that they have players debating about them, their backstories and what they bring to the game years later, with plenty of posts and video essays analysing them.
Although there are plenty of fantastic characters, there are only a few that manage to hit that special slot of being near flawless and coming off as some of the most well written characters out of the entire series, including spin-off games like Fallout 76. Here are some of the most well written characters to come across in the Fallout franchise.

8The Master
The Commander Of The Super Mutants
The villain of the first ever Fallout is known simply as The Master, the master of the super mutant race who believes that super mutants are the next logical step in human evolution. As a result, to survive the harsh wasteland, they believe all people should be converted to super mutants, even if by force.
Stellar voice acting, a terrifying design and great worldbuilding leads The Master to being one of the most interesting and sympathetic antagonists that we’ve seen so far in the Fallout series. The final confrontation with them is known to be one of the best conversations in the game.

7Dog/God
One Of The Most Interesting Super Mutants
What about when one person is two characters? That’s what happens with Dog/God,a Super Mutant with a split personality. One of them is a simple-minded and obedient figure known as ‘Dog’ whilst the other personality is a more dominant and cunning figure known as God.
The balance between both personalities is exemplary with a focus on their relationship, how you can impact the fates of the personalities and doing all of this whilst technically writing two individual characters in one.

6Joshua Graham
So Good He Steals The Show
Known as the character so good it’s even turned some players religious, Joshua Graham is the iconic deuteragonist of the Honest Hearts DLC fromFallout: New Vegas. He is a philosophical and intriguing character with a dark backstory. Once a general in Caesar’s Legion, for his failure following the first battle at Hoover Dam, he was covered in pitch, set alight and thrown into the Grand Canyon.
However, he survived and now leads a tribe as he tries to come to peace with what happened to him and forge a new future away from his old life with Caesar’s Legion. The dialogue with him is masterfully written, making you want to spend as much time with him as possible just learning about this enigmatic character on his path to redemption.

5Nick Valentine
The Synth Detective We All Love
What about characters that are just cool? A robot detective that dresses like a PI from the 1950s? Well, now that’s cool. Nick Valentine is an important character inFallout 4, helping you track down your son, Shaun after you get to Diamond City.
The character not only hasties to the main questbut is a companion with his own running commentary on the wasteland and an interesting companion quest that dives deeper into the story of this charismatic character.

4Randall Clark
A Character You Never Meet
However, there are some characters that you don’t ever encounter but still have an impact. Most of the time, these are characters that have perhaps died and haunt the narrative, but none of them do a better job than Randall Clark.
Through a few journal entries, you discover Randall Clark was a soldier who lost everything when the bombs dropped. Instead of giving up, he hid inside a cave and watched a group of survivors. Using his own knowledge as a soldier and survivalist, he tried to help the survivors without being seen, later being worshipped as a divine figure and dubbed The Father by these survivors. It’s a heart-wrenching and fascinating story of a character which is even more interesting because you never get to meet him.

3Caesar
The Dictator Of Caesar’s Legion Makes An Intriguing Villain
Normally, when you go to confront the big bad, especially of a brutal faction like Caesar’s Legion, you think you’d come across a monster in the form of some awful and cruel dictator. But instead you meet the somewhat soft-spoken and intelligent Caesar.
When you question him about Caesar’s Legion he discusses it with you, claiming that the new world needs a strict order to try and survive the brutal apocalypse, and he chose the Roman Empire to model it after. You may not agree with him, but one thing for certain is that he’s a lot more interesting than you’d ever imagine.

2Christine
A Hardened Survivor Who Can’t Talk
Another character from the Dead Money DLC from Fallout: New Vegas is Christine. When you meet her, you discover that her vocal chords have been removed, meaning that she can only communicate with you via gestures for the majority of the DLC.
You discover who she is, her past with the Brotherhood of Steel and her hatred for the antagonist of the DLC, Father Elijah, all without her saying a word. It’s an impressive and risky angle they took with this character and makes her even more worthy of being considered one of the most well written, when her interesting character is discerned through a new way of conversing.

1Robert House
The Enigmatic CEO Of RobCo Industries
Similar to Caesar, Robert House is another intellectual who has tons of dialogue you’ll want to sink your teeth into. He was the CEO of RobCo Industries who predicted when the bombs would drop and managed to save the Last Vegas strip due to his preparations, even when the bombs seemed to drop earlier than expected.
A cunning businessman, he and his army of securitrons have managed to keep a hold of the New Vegas strip and through conversation you can discuss democracy, his plans, his backstory and much more as you progress through the game, leading him to be a fantastic addition to the Fallout series.
