Summary
Falloutfans have been discussing future story scenarios for a potential Fallout 5, with it being made pretty clear that lots do not want to start out in yet another Vault.
We’ve had quite a lot of Fallout games over the past few decades, and while we’ve had a range of stories told across that time, the mainline titles follow the same standard formula more often than not. You are a Vault Dweller, and you escape from your Vault into a horrible inhospitable Wasteland, completely fresh-faced and new to the horrors of the post-apocalyptic United States. It’s such a consistent formula that even the Fallout TV show followed the same pattern.

However, no matter how good of a concept an idea is, it can begin to get stale if you repeat yourself enough, and it seems like there are a lot of fans that would rather Fallout 5 have a completely different origin story. TheTwitter account FilmsFalloutput the question to the public on Twitter, asking whether it’s possible forthe next Fallout to have a completely different setting, and the response is largely people describing their ideal stories, most of which do not start in a Vault.
Fallout Fans Don’t Want A Vault Dweller Origin Story In Fallout 5
One of the more popular suggestions is playing as a Ghoul, something the series has never allowed players to do up until this year, with the release of Fallout 76’s next expansion. Other suggestions include starting out asa member of the Enclave, an ambitious Wastelander scavenging Vaults for pre-war tech, and a Cyberpunk 2077-esque system that lets players pick their backstory and have the first hour or two of the game be different depending on your choice.
They’re all pretty neat suggestions, and proof that people may be disappointed if Fallout 5 does plop us into another Vault again, setting out on a quest to find a lost loved one. We know that Fallout stories can work without starting out in a Vault, as Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas are widely considered two of the best games in the series, but we’ll have to see whether Bethesda will be brave enough to try something a little different when they get around to making the game in one billion years' time. It’s the Elder Scrolls 6 first folks, strap in for a long wait.
