But would the creator of the series who started it all in 1997 return to the franchise himself?
As reported byVG247, Tim Cain said that he’d only work on Fallout again if Bethesda could answer one question, “What’s new about it?”
“If you don’t have an immediate answer, if you go, ‘Well, I don’t know, we may put in a new perk’, I’m probably not interested,” Cain said in a new video onhis YouTube channel.“You’re not asking me a question about money, you’re not asking me a question about power and authority, you’re asking me a personal question, with a personal answer. Which is, would this be something I’d even be interested in doing, because it’s different?”
Tim Cain Has Been Approached To Direct Games Over The Last Few Years
Tim Cain hasn’t worked on the Fallout series since 1998 with Fallout 2 where he served as a designer, but he did direct Obsidian Entertainment’s spiritual successorThe Outer Worldsin 2019. Since then, he has been asked several times if he’d like to step back into the role for new IPs, bringing that legacy with him.
“I’ve been approached in the last few years, over the pandemic, by people wanting me to direct a game for them, with money in their hands, but there was absolutely nothing new in the offer for me,” Cain revealed. “And they tried to convince me, ‘Don’t you want to make a new IP?’, ‘Don’t you want to be a director again?’, and I didn’t know what to say other than, ‘I’ve been there, I’ve done that, nothing you’re coming to me with is new.'”
While Tim Cain has semi-retired to focus on smaller solo projects and his YouTube channel,he is returning to The Outer Worlds 2 as a consultant, but whether we ever see him behind the curtains on a new Fallout game, only time will tell.
