Summary
A formerBethesdadeveloper has revealed that a rather gorey Liberator enemy concept was cut fromFallout 76during development.
There are quite a lot of horrible beasts to keep away from across the Fallout series, whether that be the incredibly disgusting Centaurs from Fallout 3 orthe extremely annoying Cazadors from Fallout: New Vegas. We know how fickle and unpredictable game development can be though, and even though there are tonnes of horrible monsters already in Fallout, many were inevitably left on the cutting room table.
Fallouthas been around for so long that it was thought thatpretty much every piece of cut content was known about, but former Bethesda developer and Fallout 76 lead artist Nathan Purkeypile has revealed thatthere were plans for a pretty stomach-turning version of a Liberator, the little blue robots players can find across Appalachia spewing Communist propaganda.
Purkeypile reveals that instead of the Scorched - disfigured humans that succumb to the Scorched Plague - he originally wanted to have enemies that would be decapitated people with a Liberator in place of their head, as the tiny robot would have taken over the body for their own use. He even explains that concepts for the enemy were made and that he even made the whole morbid thing work as part of a Game Jam.
Since there are no corpses walking around with Liberators as heads in Fallout 76, it’s safe to say that this concept was scrapped, but it would have been a pretty neat enemy type to come across, and kind of fitting given Fallout 76 is a lot spookier and more focused on cryptids than other entries in the series. All we can do is imagine what would have been, and also maybe give those previously cute little Liberators the side-eye every now and again.
